Microsoft is rolling out a redesigned sign-in experience for over a billion Microsoft accounts, emphasizing a modern, simple, and secure approach. The Microsoft Account Sign-in update, built on Microsoft’s Fluent 2 design language, is set to reach most users by the end of April 2025. This overhaul aims to improve user experience across Windows, Xbox, Microsoft 365, and other Microsoft services.
Streamlined Design and User-Centric Improvements
The new sign-in experience prioritizes simplicity and ease of use. Microsoft has streamlined the design and flow of authentication, reducing the number of concepts per screen to lower cognitive load and speed up the process. The centered design minimizes distractions, while the responsive design ensures a consistent look across devices, from desktops to mobile phones.

Based on direct customer feedback, one of the most notable enhancements is the support for theming. The new sign-in UX will offer both Light and Dark Themes, automatically enabled based on the user’s preference. This feature will first appear on gaming apps, with other consumer apps to follow.
A Unified Microsoft Account Sign-in

Emphasis on Passwordless Authentication
Microsoft is doubling down on passwordless authentication, making it a central part of the new sign-in experience. The redesigned UX is optimized for passwordless and passkey-first interactions.
When signing up for a new Microsoft account, users are encouraged to use their existing email address. By verifying the email with a one-time code, it becomes the default credential for the new account, eliminating the need for a traditional password. This approach not only simplifies the process but also enhances security.
After signing in, users are prompted to add a passkey. Passkeys are also set to become the default sign-in option whenever possible, as they offer enhanced security and faster authentication compared to passwords.
Gradual Rollout and Future Plans
The new design has already been launched to gaming web and mobile properties in February 2025 via A/B testing. The full rollout to all Microsoft consumer experiences is happening in waves throughout March and April 2025. The initial focus is on redesigning the most common and highly used screens, which account for approximately 95% of sign-in sessions. Web and mobile apps will receive the new UX first, followed by support for apps on Windows.
Does not affect Microsoft Entra Accounts
This Microsoft account authentication redesign does not currently affect Microsoft Entra accounts (work or school accounts). However, the insights gained from these improvements will inform future updates to the default Microsoft Entra and Microsoft Entra External ID account experiences.
