Following Microsoft’s triumphant $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard King for Xbox, CEO Bobby Kotick is set to step down on December 29, 2023, after nearly 33 years at the helm. Activision Blizzard confirmed the news, first reported by The Verge.
Restructuring leadership dynamics

Rather than directly replacing Bobby Kotick, an internal memo from Xbox head Phil Spencer outlines a strategic alignment of Activision Blizzard with Microsoft Gaming. Key executives such as Thomas Tippl, Rob Kostich, Mike Ybarra, and Tjodolf Sommestad will now report to Microsoft’s president of Game Content and Studios, Matt Booty (best last name). Chief officers at Activision Blizzard will work closely with Microsoft Gaming executives during the transition, providing support until March 2024. This transitional phase will ensure a seamless integration of Activision Blizzard into the Microsoft Gaming framework.
Departures of notable figures
Blizzard and King vice chairman Humam Sakhnini and Activision Blizzard’s corporate affairs vice president and chief communications officer Lulu Meservey are set to leave at the end of December and January, respectively. Meservey will collaborate with Xbox’s communications lead Kari Perez to facilitate a leadership transition plan for the ABK Communications team. Spencer reassures that the leadership teams for Activision Publishing, Blizzard, and King will remain unchanged. This commitment to continuity aims to maintain the day-to-day operations seamlessly, providing stability and clarity to the teams involved.
Phil Spencer expresses optimism about the future, emphasizing that despite these leadership changes, the core focus remains on delivering groundbreaking gaming experiences. The 2024 lineup promises exciting games across Activision, Bethesda, Blizzard, King, and Xbox Game Studios. Acknowledging Bobby Kotick’s significant contributions to the gaming industry, Spencer recognizes the enduring legacy of Activision Blizzard under Kotick’s watch. Despite controversies, the memo expresses gratitude for Kotick’s collaboration in the acquisition process and extends best wishes for his future endeavors.
A new chapter for Activision Blizzard under Xbox without Bobby Kotick
The departure of Bobby Kotick and other top executives signifies a turning point for Activision Blizzard under Xbox’s umbrella. Microsoft’s commitment to a seamless transition, outlined by Phil Spencer, suggests a dedication to maintaining the status quo for ABK employees while instilling positive cultural changes. Microsoft remains committed to fostering a culture that is “welcoming, empowering, and committed to Gaming for Everyone.”
