Microsoft is rolling out a sweeping wave of Windows 11 updates that “make every Windows 11 PC an AI PC,” centered on Copilot Voice, Copilot Vision, and new agentic features that help the OS understand context and take actions with permission. Most experiences are designed to work across Windows 11 devices without requiring a Copilot+ PC, with only a few integrations reserved for newer hardware.

Copilot Voice

A new “Hey Copilot” wake word lets users start talking to their PC hands‑free, reflecting Microsoft’s push to make voice a natural complement to keyboard and mouse on Windows 11. Microsoft says users engage with Copilot more via voice, and the feature is opt‑in so it only listens when enabled. Third‑party reports confirm “Hey Copilot” is part of a broad rollout to all Windows 11 PCs, not just Copilot+ hardware.

Copilot Vision

Copilot Vision is expanding globally in all markets where Copilot is offered, enabling the assistant to “see” your screen—when you opt in—and give step‑by‑step guidance inside apps and windows. Highlights lets you ask “show me how,” and Copilot will point out exactly where to click in supported apps, while the experience is also gaining text‑in/text‑out options for Insiders so you can chat instead of using voice. Microsoft positions Vision as a coach across tasks like creative editing, learning new tools, and navigating complex interfaces, with transparency and user control built in.

Taskbar and search

A reimagined Ask Copilot on the taskbar brings one‑click access to Copilot Voice and Vision, designed to make the taskbar a dynamic hub for help, guidance, and instant results as you type. Copilot’s deeper placement alongside a refreshed, faster search experience aims to streamline launching apps, finding files, and adjusting settings without granting Copilot blanket access to your content. This integration is part of Microsoft’s broader move to weave AI directly into everyday Windows flows rather than confining it to a chat window.

Copilot Actions

Copilot Actions are expanding from the web to Windows, previewing the ability for Copilot to take actions on local files with your approval, such as sorting photos or extracting information from PDFs. Microsoft frames this as an “agentic” step, where you describe a task in plain language and the agent works across desktop and web apps while you stay in control and can check progress any time. Early trials will focus on a narrow set of use cases to improve reliability before broadening.

Connectors and settings

Microsoft is also highlighting Copilot connectors that link services like OneDrive and Google Drive so Copilot can surface personal content you choose to connect using plain‑English prompts, alongside simple export to Word, Excel, or PowerPoint to jumpstart documents. Copilot’s integration with Windows Settings is deepening, providing direct links or guided navigation to relevant settings pages when you ask for help like “make my screen easier to read”. These additions aim to reduce friction between intent, content, and action inside the OS.

File Explorer AI actions

Windows 11 now includes AI actions in File Explorer, allowing right‑click actions like image edits and document summaries directly from the context menu to speed up common workflows. Built‑in options include Bing Visual Search, Blur background, Erase objects, and Remove background via Photos and Paint, while Microsoft 365 subscribers can use Summarize in Copilot for files stored in OneDrive and SharePoint. These features are rolling out alongside broader File Explorer productivity improvements tied to Microsoft 365.

Gaming Copilot (Beta) is integrated into the Game Bar, letting players talk to Copilot for tips, recommendations, and context‑aware help without leaving their game. Xbox’s recent updates also highlight the ROG Xbox Ally handhelds, where Windows, Xbox, and Copilot experiences come together with fast access to Game Pass and installed PC titles. The goal is AI‑powered assistance on the go that keeps you in the flow while playing.

Security commitments

Copilot Actions

Microsoft says Windows 11 remains secure by design and default, and it is introducing formal safeguards around agentic features so users control what Copilot Actions can do, see progress, and approve sensitive steps. The company emphasizes responsible preview rollouts to gather feedback and refine privacy and security before broader deployment. Additional security advances and enterprise controls for agent experiences are slated to be discussed at Microsoft Ignite.

Availability and upgrades

Microsoft and media briefings indicate the majority of these experiences are coming to all Windows 11 PCs, with Copilot Voice and Vision rolling out widely and most features not requiring Copilot+ hardware. With Windows 10 support now ended, Microsoft continues to encourage upgrades to Windows 11 to stay secure and access the new AI‑powered capabilities. Many of the most compelling features are available as app and service updates from the Microsoft Store and within the Copilot app on Windows 11.
