Forza Horizon 6 is shaping up to be the most explorable entry in the series yet, turning Japan into a sprawling playground of seamless races, collectibles, and player-driven discovery. With a new focus on tourism, open-world exploration, and flexible progression, Playground Games is clearly steering the Horizon Festival in a more adventurous direction.
A fresh start in Japan

Instead of dropping you in as an established racing superstar, Forza Horizon 6 casts you as a fan arriving in Japan with friends, hoping to earn a spot in the Horizon Invitational. That framing doubles as a smooth tutorial, easing new and returning players into how different cars handle across tarmac, dirt, and mixed surfaces.
As detailed in the Xbox Wire preview post, the opening prologue quickly showcases the 2025 GR GT Prototype as you blast through rural Japan, Tokyo’s neon streets, and even past a live rocket launch before the world fully opens up. From there, the festival campaign exists more as a soft guide than a rigid checklist, encouraging players to explore at their own pace with only a loose “golden path” to follow.
Exploration-first open world
For the first time in the series, the world map uses a “fog of war” system that reveals itself only as you drive, making every new icon feel like something you discovered rather than a pre-marked waypoint. Design Director Torben Ellert explains that this “Discover Japan” philosophy means that if you find a piece of content in the world, you can play it, reinforcing a sense of freedom and ownership over your journey.
That approach feeds into a wide range of on-road activities: Time Attacks let you chase lap records filled with ghost cars from other players, while Drag Races scratch the itch to go extremely fast in straight-line sprints without worrying about corners. These activities pull in times and data from the broader player base and your friends list, so billboards and ghost rivals constantly tempt you to try “just one more run.”
Aftermarket Cars, mascots, and the Journal
A standout new system is Aftermarket Cars, which occasionally present time-limited chances to buy discounted cars that are contextually placed in the world—like stumbling upon a Dodge SRT Demon parked right beside a Drag Race route. Ellert describes this as a subtle nudge to try fresh machinery that fits what you’re doing, making it easier to immediately swap from an aging starter car into something far more exciting.
Japan itself is dotted with collectible mascots in each region, some obvious by the roadside and others tucked away to lure players down unfamiliar alleys, forest paths, or backroads. The new Journal feature layers on top of that exploration, letting you capture photos of iconic landmarks and hotspots to build a personal record of your travels across Horizon’s take on Japan.
Customizable garages and player homes
Forza Horizon 6 expands player expression with fully customizable garages attached to each home you acquire, starting at Mei’s house—your first base. These spaces can be decorated with furniture, lighting, props, or left minimal so your car collection is the star, supporting everything from gritty, grounded builds to wild fantasy lairs.
Playground Games sees this as a way to give players real agency over where they store and show off their cars, tying into a broader push to let you “build something that is yours” in the world. Friends can be invited to admire your creations, and community-made garage layouts will also be shareable, further extending the social side of car culture.
Release date, platforms, and Game Pass
Forza Horizon 6 launches May 19, 2026, on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Xbox Cloud Gaming as an Xbox Play Anywhere title. The game will be available day one with Xbox Game Pass, with more than 550 real-world cars and Horizon’s largest, most vertical map yet waiting for players who want to chase lap times—or simply drive into the sunset because it looks too good not to.
