On the official Xbox Wire blog today, Microsoft announced the release of Grounded 2: The Toxic Tangle, the survival sequel’s first major content drop of 2026. This update completely transforms Brookhollow Park with a sprawling new Garden biome, adds the fully rideable Ladybug Buggy, introduces fresh creature types, overhauls the mutation system, and delivers long-awaited building upgrades for the community’s base builders.
A Garden Grown Out of Control

Developer Obsidian Entertainment has cooked up something wild in this new update. The Garden biome is unlike anything players have explored before. Twisting vines wrap around the greenhouse in chaotic patterns, creating hidden crawlspaces, vertical climbs, and confusing yet rewarding exploration routes that beg players to ask themselves, “How did I get up here?”

The new environment is dense and unpredictable, full of vegetation that dwarfs the player’s tiny perspective. The pumpkin patch returns in spectacular form, surrounded by the new “carrot jungle,” a network of lush greenery and dangerous wildlife. Hidden stashes and loot opportunities appear around every corner—but not all surprises are pleasant.
The strange Tang substance, a new environmental hazard described as both corruption and contagion, seeps through the soil and water of Brookhollow. It’s a visual and mechanical game-changer, coating surfaces and enemies with a sour, glowing toxicity that challenges players to rethink survival strategies.
New Ride: The Ladybug Buggy

For many players, Grounded’s ladybugs were friendly giants or unwilling victims. Now, they’re your tank. The new Ladybug Buggy is a full-fledged, rideable mount built for combat and exploration. It features a pressurized water cannon, perfect for hosing down pests or purging Tang buildup. It can ram enemies headfirst with brute force, and its natural armor makes it one of the toughest companions in the game.
This new mount delivers both fun and function—it’s part battle companion, part utility vehicle. The Buggy regenerates health over time, allowing for extended adventures deeper into the toxic Garden. With this addition, mobility around the park feels dramatically improved.
Creatures: Cute Meets Creepy

As with any major Grounded update, new creatures are the stars of the show—and they don’t disappoint. The Earwigs arrive as coordinated, swarm-style enemies that exploit teamwork far better than most bugs you’ve faced before. The Potato Beetles, on the other hand, are lumbering tanks that will challenge even seasoned players to adapt mid-combat. Then there’s the newcomer destined to become a fan favorite, the Woolly Aphid—adorable at first glance, but possibly hiding a few nasty surprises.
Adding to the suspense, the Masked Stranger makes an ominous return, teasing more of the ongoing narrative mystery that’s threaded through Grounded 2. And somewhere in the depths of the Garden lurks the Snake Colossus—a towering threat that Obsidian describes with one chilling line: “You’ll know it when you see it.”
Reworked Systems: Mutations and Building
The Toxic Tangle update doesn’t stop at content—it changes how players build and fight. The game’s mutation system is getting a major quality-of-life upgrade. Mutations now come in two types:
-
Active mutations, which function as before, allowing players to pick abilities directly.
-
Passive mutations, which now apply automatically based on a player’s current weapon loadout.
This streamlines customization and improves combat flow, freeing players from frequent menu navigation. Whether players are blocking a Tang-covered Rust Beetle or switching between melee and ranged setups, the new approach encourages hybrid playstyles without the downtime.
Base-building also takes a major leap forward, with new pieces designed specifically to improve aesthetic and structural creativity. Builders can now experiment with the Pumpkin Set, updated Mushroom Kit, Scale Roof Set, and refreshed Acorn Stairs. And yes—floor hatches have finally been added, directly responding to community feedback. These new pieces expand construction possibilities and improve parity between kit themes, making elaborate player-made structures look and function better than ever.
Combat Challenges and Updated Packs
For those seeking tougher gameplay, the Garden MIX.R and O.R.C. wave challenges are now active. These advanced survival events push combat efficiency to the limit, testing even veteran players’ team coordination. They’re ideal for multiplayer groups looking for new rewards or just bragging rights.
Meanwhile, the Founder’s Pack has received a refresh as well. Players who supported the game early now gain access to decorative base builders like the High Roller’s Dice Bag, the Champion’s Banner, and a collection of new celebration-style decor items. It’s a way to show off your journey through Brookhollow Park with visual flair.
Creative Mode Returns Next Month
Obsidian isn’t stopping here. The studio confirmed the long-awaited Playgrounds Mode is returning in February 2026 through the Public Test Beta (PTB). This creative sandbox will reintroduce the powerful mod and custom-level creation tools from the first Grounded, letting players craft their own mini-games, boss arenas, puzzles, and unique experimental challenges.
Playgrounds have been a core part of the Grounded community, allowing user-generated content to thrive alongside official updates. With the builder toolkit now massively expanded, it’s easy to imagine the return of player-made “Theme Parks,” “Arena Trials,” and ambitious collaborative builds that push the engine to its limits.
Available Now on Xbox and PC
Grounded 2: The Toxic Tangle is live now for all players in Game Preview on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and via Xbox Cloud Gaming, with the Steam Early Access version also updated. As always, the game is included for Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass subscribers.
For those new to the series, Grounded 2 builds on the concept that made the original a cult hit: shrinking players down to insect size in a backyard-turned-jungle, where survival depends on teamwork, crafting, and creativity. The sequel broadens that world exponentially, delivering new mounts (Buggies), fresh biomes, deeper combat systems, and evolving mysteries beneath the park’s surface.
With The Toxic Tangle, Obsidian continues its tradition of blending whimsical exploration with eerie undertones—the cheerful yard setting conceals something far darker, and each update peels back another layer of that lurking threat.
The Garden Awaits
Grounded 2: The Toxic Tangle feels like a proper evolution for the series: richer world-building, smoother systems, and a renewed sense of discovery. Between the toxic corruption creeping across the soil, the introduction of the Ladybug Buggy, and the upgraded creative tools, this update reasserts Grounded 2 as one of Game Pass’s most imaginative survival experiences.
Whether you’re a builder, fighter, or explorer, there’s something new waiting in the Garden—and it doesn’t look entirely friendly.
