Highguard is shaping up to be the breakout “new thing” in this week’s Next Week on Xbox lineup, bringing a fresh spin on competitive shooters from some of the talent behind Titanfall and Apex Legends. Launching January 26 as a free‑to‑play title on Xbox Series X|S with cross‑play and cross‑progression, it takes the crisp gunplay that Respawn fans expect and drops it into a fantasy‑meets‑sci‑fi world of Wardens, arcane gunslingers, and a mythical continent up for grabs.

Developer Wildlight Entertainment describes Highguard as a PvP “raid shooter” built around two distinct phases: first, crews battle across open landscapes to seize an objective called the Shieldbreaker; then, once a team secures it, the match flips into a raid phase where attackers must break into and destroy an enemy base. The flow is designed to move from fluid team fights in the field to intense, focused assaults on fortifications, with plenty of opportunities for clutch defenses, last‑second steals, and aggressive flanks.

On Xbox, Highguard immediately stands out because of its tone and movement. Gameplay footage shows Wardens riding medieval‑style mounts through dense forests, storming ancient castles, and diving into underground mines, all while slinging glowing projectiles and using modern‑feeling weapons and abilities. It is not just another urban sci‑fi map rotation; Wildlight is leaning into elaborate, highly detailed environments that support different strategies and angles around the Shieldbreaker objective.

Under the hood, the game is built for longevity in the same way Apex Legends was. Wildlight’s leadership has talked about wanting a studio where design drives decisions and live games can be supported “without compromise,” drawing on lessons from building and maintaining Titanfall and Apex. For Xbox players burned out on more traditional hero shooters, Highguard’s hybrid of raid structure, mounts, and fantasy‑infused abilities might be just different enough to feel new while still keeping the tight, responsive shooting those teams are known for.

From a calendar perspective, Highguard also arrives at a smart time. It follows last week’s big free‑to‑play spotlight in 2XKO but sits in a quieter overall release window, giving it more room to attract attention from Xbox players who want something live and competitive but are not necessarily hunting for another fighter. If it sticks the landing on progression and content cadence, this could be one of those games that quietly becomes a fixture on Xbox dashboards throughout 2026.
