How to change your Xbox gamertag like a genius in 2024

Are you tired of your outdated Xbox gamertag? Do you want to update it to reflect your current gaming persona? Changing your Xbox gamertag is a straightforward process that can be done on your Xbox console, the Xbox app, or the Xbox website. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you change your Xbox gamertag and give your gaming profile a fresh new look.

Changing Xbox Gamertag on consoles

It’s important to point out that on Xbox 360, gamertags can be up to 15 characters long, including spaces but they can’t start with a number. On Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows 11: Gamertags can be up to 12 characters long, including spaces. They can’t start with a number.

Xbox One and later (One S/X® and Series S/X™):

  1. Press the Xbox button on your controller.
  2. Select System > Settings > Personalization > My Profile > Customize Profile.
  3. Select your current gamertag, then select it again to type a new gamertag or choose from the suggested list.

Xbox 360:

  1. Go to the Social menu.
  2. Select Sign In or Out > Choose your profile to sign in.
  3. Scroll to Settings and select Profile.
  4. Select Edit Profile > Gamertag > Enter New Gamertag.
  5. Type your new gamertag and select Done.

Changing Gamertag on Xbox app

Using the Xbox app on your phone:

  1. Open the Xbox app on your phone.
  2. Click your current Xbox player icon.
  3. Click the gear icon in the top right corner to access settings.
  4. Select Help Topics and then Manage Your Account.
  5. Choose the “How to change your Xbox gamertag” option.
  6. Click the “On the web” option, which will direct you to a web browser page.
  7. Sign in with your Microsoft account linked to your Xbox account.
  8. Select your new gamertag and check if it’s available.
  9. If available, select Change gamertag to change your gamertag.

Using the Xbox app on your Windows PC:

  1. Open the Xbox app on your Windows PC.

Changing Gamertag on Xbox Website

Using the Xbox website:

  1. Go to the Xbox website and sign in to your Microsoft account.
  2. Click on your current gamertag in the top-right corner and click Settings.

Important things to keep in mind

  • You can change your gamertag once for free. If you’ve already changed it in the past and want to change it again, you’ll have to pay a fee.
  • Be cautious when allowing others to access your Xbox account, as they can change your gamertag without your knowledge.
  • Give your gaming friends a heads-up to avoid confusion. Older games, 2020 or earlier, might not recognize the new gamertag update, leading to your gamertag displaying differently in these older games.
