Windows 11 includes a “Game Mode” that automatically optimizes your PC to run games at the best performance possible when it detects a game in progress. It usually works well, but it can cause performance issues on some custom-built Windows PC setups. It’s easy to disable it, here’s what you need to do.
What is Game Mode?
Game Mode is a special mode within Windows 11 that gives your game processes priority over all others, with the idea that the game will run faster with fewer performance problems and provide the best and most stable framerate for your PC. It also temporarily prevents Windows Update from installing drivers or asking to restart your PC to install updates in the middle of a game. Microsoft introduced this gaming feature as part of the Windows 10 Creators Update in 2017.
In rare cases, it can cause performance issues. If you run into trouble, it can easily be turned off in Settings. Remember, the feature will only activate on Windows 10 or Windows 11 when it detects you’re playing a game. Otherwise, you can safely leave it enabled.
Game Mode performance impact
Game Mode in Windows 11 can actually hinder performance in several specific ways:
- Frame rate reduction: Counter-Strike 2 experiences a significant performance drop with Game Mode enabled, showing a 3.1% decrease in average frame rate and a 19.5% decrease in 1% low framerates. On lower-spec systems, the impact is even more severe, with up to 7.2% lower average frame rates and 42.5% worse frame timing.
- Resource allocation issues: Game Mode’s attempt to prioritize gaming resources can create conflicts with other essential processes that games depend on, leading to performance inconsistencies. The dynamic resource allocation can cause unexpected fluctuations in performance as the system continuously adjusts resource distribution.
- Hardware conflicts: The way Game Mode adjusts system voltage and frequency settings may not be compatible with all GPU and CPU driver configurations. This incompatibility can result in reduced hardware utilization and lower performance.
- Multitasking impact: Game Mode restricts background processes and system tasks, which can actually be detrimental when those processes are needed for optimal game performance. This is particularly problematic for users who stream or run other necessary background applications while gaming.
How to turn off Game Mode on Windows 11
- First, you need to open Windows Settings by using the keyboard shortcut Windows key + I, by searching for “Settings” in Windows Search, or by right clicking the Start menu and choosing Settings.
- Next, go to Gaming and select Game Mode from the list of options.
- Toggle the Game Mode switch to Off.
When you are done, close Settings. If you want to re-enable it on Windows 10 or Windows 11, all you need to do is go to Settings > Game Mode and switch the Game Mode toggle to On.
When to disable Game Mode
You should consider disabling Game Mode if:
- You frequently multitask while gaming.
- You experience unstable frame rates.
- Your games show lower CPU and GPU utilization than expected.
- You notice inconsistent performance across gaming sessions.
