January’s Xbox platform update is one of the most important quality‑of‑life pushes Microsoft has made in a while, and it touches almost every way people play: PC, handhelds, cloud, and even retro streaming. In a new post, Microsoft outlines upgrades ranging from Xbox Play Anywhere expansions and cloud streaming on Hisense TVs to better handheld labeling and fresh mouse-and-keyboard support on cloud titles.

January 2026 Xbox Update: Xbox app expands to Arm PCs

Microsoft is officially bringing the full Xbox PC app experience to Arm-based Windows 11 devices, turning the new wave of Arm laptops and handhelds into first‑class Xbox launchers. Players will be able to download and play titles from the Xbox PC app catalog locally on Arm-based Windows 11 PCs, including everything available through their Xbox Game Pass subscription.

This move significantly widens the hardware that can run PC Game Pass natively, instead of relying solely on cloud streaming. For owners of upcoming Arm-based Windows handhelds and ultraportable laptops, it’s a big step toward making “Xbox on any device” feel real rather than just a slogan.

New Game Save Sync Indicator

One of the most requested features from multi‑device players, the Game Save Sync Indicator, is now live across PC and handheld experiences. The feature provides a simple, real-time visual indicator of your cloud save status, so you always know when it’s safe to close a game and switch devices.

The goal is to remove the anxiety of wondering if your progress actually made it to the cloud before you shut down a PC or handheld. Microsoft frames this as “no more guesswork, no more lost progress,” emphasizing seamless, stress‑free play for people bouncing between devices on the go.

Cloud gaming coming to Hisense and V homeOS TVs

When the rollout begins, Xbox Game Pass subscribers on supported tiers will be able to stream hundreds of titles directly on these TVs via Xbox Cloud Gaming, no console required.

This continues Xbox’s strategy of turning smart TVs into full cloud consoles, joining earlier Samsung and other TV integrations. Microsoft says it will share more details on supported models and regional availability in the coming months, but the direction is clear: more TV brands, more living rooms, more frictionless Game Pass access.

Handheld Compatibility Program and Xbox Play Anywhere

Microsoft’s Handheld Compatibility Program is also getting an update, making it easier to see which titles are best suited to portable play. Handheld compatibility labels now show up on product detail pages across Windows devices, and supported Windows handhelds feature a dedicated handheld-compatible channel on the Home screen.

Recently added handheld‑friendly titles include:

  • Arc Raiders – Mostly Compatible

  • Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – Handheld Optimized

  • Dave the Diver – Handheld Optimized

  • Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition – Handheld Optimized

  • Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade – Mostly Compatible

  • Marvel Cosmic Invasion – Handheld Optimized

  • Octopath Traveler 0 – Mostly Compatible

  • The Outer Worlds 2 – Handheld Optimized

  • Red Dead Redemption – Mostly Compatible

  • Silent Hill 2 – Handheld Optimized

On top of that, Xbox Play Anywhere has quietly passed 1,000 supported games, allowing players to buy once and play on console, PC, and supported handhelds with shared progress, DLC, and achievements. Recent additions to the XPA list in December include titles like The Finals, Octopath Traveler 0, Marvel Cosmic Invasion, Dome Keeper, Oddsparks: An Automation Adventure – Ultimate Edition, Talisman: Digital 5th Edition, Wylde Flowers, and dozens of smaller indie releases.

Stream your own games and Retro Classics

Recently added cloud‑streamable games include Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, Resident Evil Village, Just Cause 3, Little Nightmares III, Planet Coaster: Console Edition, Don’t Starve Together: Console Edition, and more.

This sits alongside Retro Classics on Game Pass, powered by Antstream Arcade, which now offers more than 100 retro titles and has already attracted over 1 million players. Upcoming retro arrivals include Sky Patrol, Keystone Kapers, Laser Gates, and Rise of the Dragon, all playable with tournaments, challenges, and community events baked in.

Mouse/keyboard support and helping shape Xbox’s future

Mouse and keyboard support continues to expand across Xbox and Windows devices, with hundreds of games and apps now allowing wired USB peripherals for navigation and play. On the cloud side, Microsoft notes that there are already more than 230 games with touch controls available, giving players yet another way to access their library without a traditional controller.

The January 2026 Xbox update post ends with Microsoft again encouraging players to join the Xbox Insider Program if they want to help test features like these early and influence future platform changes. Xbox points players to the official support site and Insider Hub on both Xbox consoles and Windows PC, reinforcing that community feedback is a key input into what gets built and shipped next.
