Microsoft has announced the upcoming release of System Center 2025, the latest iteration of its comprehensive datacenter management platform. This new version is set to revolutionize the way datacenters are managed, offering a simplified experience that spans on-premises, cloud, and hybrid environments.
Simplified datacenter management
System Center 2025 is designed to address the complexities of modern IT environments, which often involve multiple teams and solutions across local datacenters, clouds, and co-locations. Since its initial release in 2008, System Center has been at the forefront of datacenter management, providing leading-edge capabilities to keep IT professionals in control. The new version builds upon this legacy, introducing enhancements that support infrastructure modernization, heterogeneous infrastructure management, and enhanced security features.
System Center 2025 features
The upcoming release includes several notable features and enhancements, such as:
- Data Protection Manager (DPM) 2025: This update brings the capability to exclude specific disks from backups in Hyper-V environments, offering greater flexibility and efficiency in data protection strategies. DPM 2025 also integrates seamlessly with SharePoint Subscription Edition and provides virtual TPM (vTPM) support for VMware.
- Enhanced security: Microsoft has significantly reduced the number of scenarios that use CredSSP and NTLM as the authentication mechanism. All VMs created through Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) will default to Generation 2, which provides faster and more secure booting. Additionally, System Center products now support Transport Layer Security (TLS) version 1.3, ensuring that all data transmissions are protected by the latest security standards.
- Windows Server 2025 integration: System Center 2025 will be released alongside Windows Server 2025, which boasts advanced features that improve security, performance, and flexibility. Windows Server 2025 includes features such as AD object repair, channel binding audit support, and DC-location algorithm improvements.
General availability and release timeline
System Center 2025 is scheduled to reach General Availability (GA) in the fall of 2024, with all System Center products, including VMM, DPM, System Center Operations Manager (SCOM), Service Manager (SM), and Orchestrator (SCO), expected to be released in their 2025 form by Q4CY2024.
Microsoft’s announcement of System Center 2025 marks a significant milestone in Microsoft’s efforts to simplify and secure datacenter management. With its enhanced features and focus on modernization, System Center 2025 is poised to become an essential tool for IT professionals managing complex IT environments. As the GA date approaches, Microsoft is expected to provide further details on the release, and IT professionals can look forward to a more streamlined and secure datacenter management experience.
