Microsoft has officially announced that the highly anticipated Fable reboot has been delayed from its previously announced 2025 release window to 2026. The announcement came during the latest episode of the Official Xbox Podcast, where Craig Duncan, head of Xbox Game Studios, shared the updated timeline for the fantasy RPG’s return.
The Fable reboot delay announcement
“We previously announced the date for Fable as 2025. We are actually going to give Fable more time, and it’s going to ship in 2026 now,” Duncan stated during the podcast. While acknowledging that this might disappoint eager fans, Duncan was quick to reassure the community that the extended development period would ultimately benefit the final product.
The delay represents a significant shift in Microsoft’s release strategy for one of its most beloved franchises. Just last year, during the Xbox summer showcase in June 2024, Microsoft had confidently announced the 2025 release window, generating considerable excitement among the gaming community.
Developer confident despite setback
Despite the postponement, Xbox leadership expressed unwavering confidence in Playground Games, the studio tasked with reviving the Fable franchise. Playground Games, best known for their critically acclaimed Forza Horizon racing series, has been working on bringing Albion back to life since the project was first announced in July 2020.
“While I know that’s not maybe the news people want to hear, what I want to assure people of is that it’s definitely worth the wait,” Duncan emphasized. “I have unequivocal confidence in the Playground team. If you think about their history and legacy for Forza Horizon, the last few games, critically acclaimed, 92 Metacritic, award-winning, beautiful, play great.”
A glimpse of what’s to come
To soften the blow of the delay announcement, Microsoft also released new pre-alpha gameplay footage during the podcast, giving fans a tantalizing glimpse of what Playground Games has been developing. The footage showcased striking environments and brief combat sequences, demonstrating the progress made thus far.
Duncan shared his firsthand experience with the game, stating, “I played some of the city elements. I played some of the quests, I played some of the combat, I played a boss battle, I’ve used magic… it felt amazing and I had a great time.”
The return to Albion

Last year’s gameplay preview revealed that the story will center around a protagonist named Humphry, a retired hero who “will be drawn out of retirement when a shadowy figure from his past endangers Albion’s very survival.” The game promises to maintain the series’ trademark British humor while updating the experience for modern audiences.
Delay and fan reaction
This delay comes at a time when Microsoft is working to strengthen its first-party game lineup following its acquisition of Activision Blizzard. The company has faced criticism in recent years for delays and cancellations of anticipated titles, making the successful delivery of Fable particularly important for Xbox’s reputation.
Duncan emphasized that the decision to delay was made with the best interests of both the game and development team in mind. “I want the community to understand that we do these things for the best of the games and the teams, and ultimately that results in the best game for the community,” he explained.
What to expect in 2026
According to Duncan, the new Fable will combine “the stunning visuals you expect from Playground Games with exceptional gameplay, British humor, and Playground’s unique perspective… all in what is undoubtedly the most beautifully crafted rendition of Albion that you have ever encountered.”
While the exact release date within 2026 remains unspecified, the additional development time will likely allow Playground Games to polish and refine what promises to be a significant entry in Xbox’s portfolio of exclusive titles.
