Microsoft has rolled out a substantial update for Windows 11 through the KB5037853 preview release, introducing a range of new features and improvements across the operating system. This cumulative update serves as a preview of the changes slated for next month’s Patch Tuesday release.
KB5037853 update for Windows 11
One of the key highlights is the revamped File Explorer, which has received several enhancements. The address bar now features a redesigned header with updated buttons, including a refresh button placed next to the navigation controls. Additionally, the address bar removes the green progress bar in favor of a new snipping animation that appears as you load a new location.
File Explorer fixes
The update also brings a new “Details” pane to File Explorer, providing more information and actions for specific files, folders, or drives. Users can now view details such as file type, size, location, and date modified, as well as access options to share files or view their properties.
Microsoft has introduced a new account manager in the Start menu, encouraging users to switch to a Microsoft account if they are currently using a local account. For those already signed in with a Microsoft account, the new account manager will highlight the benefits of Microsoft 365, available OneDrive storage, and reminders to back up files and add a phone number for account recovery.
Addressing a long-standing issue, the KB5037853 update fixes a problem where File Explorer could take up to two minutes to launch when pinning a folder to Quick Access that is shared on a network. This critical performance issue had affected many users after upgrading to Windows 11 22H2 or 23H2.
Another notable addition is the support for Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) Audio headsets, which previously lacked the option to connect or disconnect. The update also resolves an issue that caused distorted screen portions when playing videos in Chromium-based browsers, like Microsoft Edge.
Users in China
For users in China, Microsoft has included the PC Manager app, offering features like one-click boost, storage clean-up, file management, and protection.
Looking ahead
The KB5037853 update also brings improvements to touch keyboards and addresses various other bugs and issues related to printers, encrypted email apps, and more.
While this update introduces a wealth of new features and fixes, Microsoft has acknowledged one known issue affecting IT admins. Files copied using Group Policy Preferences might fail or create empty shortcuts or files using 0 bytes.
Overall, the KB5037853 preview release for Windows 11 demonstrates Microsoft’s commitment to continuously enhancing the operating system’s functionality and user experience. Users can expect these changes to be included in next month’s Patch Tuesday release, further improving the Windows 11 ecosystem.
