In recognition of Safer Internet Day, Microsoft has highlighted its commitment to online safety, particularly in the context of the increasing adoption of generative AI technology. Safer Internet Day is an annual event that brings people around the world together to create a safer and better online environment, especially for youth. Microsoft has a longstanding commitment to child safety online and sees a need for continuing research to help evolve approaches to online safety.

Online safety on Safer Internet Day

Microsoft has published annual data since 2016 that surveys how people of varying ages use and view the internet. The latest consumer-based report is based on a survey of nearly 17,000 individuals. The survey results show that young people trust their parents and go to them for support and advice about online safety. To help young people, educators, and families navigate the digital world, Microsoft is releasing two new resources about being safe online and a toolkit for students and educators.

In addition, Microsoft has released new research illustrating the online risks and the value of safety tools to keep kids safer in the digital environment. Most parents report taking action to keep their kids safer online, including checking their children’s online activities, receiving activity reports, and regularly talking to their children about their online activities. The research showed that parents generally viewed safety features as effective tools to help keep their children safe online, and 81% of parents reported using at least one.

These initiatives underscore Microsoft’s commitment to digital safety and its ongoing efforts to work with policymakers and others around the world to shape effective, proportional responses to help make the internet a safe space for everyone.
