Windows 11’s Snipping Tool and Notepad get a creative overhaul, Insider Preview unveils new markup and AI features

Windows Insiders are getting a first look at the latest updates to two of Windows 11’s most fundamental applications: the Snipping Tool and Notepad.

These updates, which are currently rolling out to users in the Canary and Dev Channels, promise to enhance user experience with new features that cater to both productivity and creativity.

Snipping Tool: Annotate with ease

The Snipping Tool, a staple for screenshot capture and annotation, has been upgraded to version 11.2401.32.0. This update introduces a highly requested feature: the ability to add shapes to captures. Users can now quickly insert rectangles, ovals, lines, and arrows to mark up their screenshots, making it easier to highlight important information or guide viewers through a visual process.

To use this new feature, simply select the shapes button in the toolbar and choose the desired shape. You can customize the fill or outline color to your preference. Once drawn, shapes can be resized, moved, or recolored before finalizing the annotation. If you make a mistake, the eraser tool or undo function allows for easy corrections. This enhancement is particularly useful for educators, technical writers, and anyone who needs to create instructional content or provide clear feedback on visual elements.

Notepad: AI-powered assistance

Notepad, the classic text editor, has also received a significant update to version 11.2401.25.0. In a move that aligns with the current AI trend, Notepad now integrates with Copilot, an AI-powered assistant. This feature is designed to help users understand complex text such as code snippets, log files, or other technical documents[4]. By leveraging AI, Notepad can become a more powerful tool for developers, IT professionals, and anyone who works with code or technical data.

Microsoft user feedback: Shaping the future

Microsoft continues to emphasize the importance of user feedback in the development of these applications. Windows Insiders are encouraged to share their experiences and suggestions through the Feedback Hub (WIN + F), which plays a crucial role in refining and improving features based on real-world use.

The latest updates to the Snipping Tool and Notepad reflect Microsoft’s commitment to enhancing the user experience through innovation and user feedback. By introducing new markup capabilities and AI integration, these tools are evolving to meet the needs of a diverse user base. As these features are tested and refined within the Insider community, they pave the way for a more versatile and intelligent Windows 11 experience.

For Windows Insiders, these updates offer a glimpse into the future of Windows 11 productivity tools. For the broader user base, they signal exciting developments on the horizon, as Microsoft continues to integrate user feedback and cutting-edge technology into its software ecosystem.
