How to turn off Microsoft Copilot efficiently on Windows 11

Microsoft Copilot, also known as Windows Copilot, has emerged as a tool designed to enhance productivity on Windows 11. However, there may come a time when you need to turn off or you might want to get rid of Microsoft Copilot. Whether it’s for troubleshooting purposes or simply to free up system resources, turning off Microsoft Copilot is a relatively simple process.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to turn off and uninstall Microsoft Copilot on Windows 11.

Uninstall the Copilot app

Copilot on Windows now ships as a regular app, rather than the earlier “Copilot in Windows” experience. To remove it for your account:

1. Open Settings with Win + I.
2. Go to Apps > Installed apps.
3. Find Microsoft Copilot, select the three dots (…), then choose Uninstall.

You can also open Copilot with the Copilot key or Win + C while it remains installed.

PowerShell option

Advanced users can use the documented app-management approach to remove the app for the current account in PowerShell with Get-AppxPackage -Name Microsoft.Copilot | Remove-AppxPackage. Review the command before running it, especially on a shared or managed PC.

For managed PCs: use AppLocker

Organizations that need to prevent the app from running should use AppLocker guidance for Microsoft Copilot, including a publisher rule for Microsoft Corporation and the MICROSOFT.COPILOT package. Microsoft says the older Turn off Windows Copilot Group Policy and TurnOffWindowsCopilot MDM setting are subject to near-term deprecation, so they are no longer the recommended approach.
