Wendy’s Co. is set to revolutionize the drive-thru experience with the expansion of its AI-powered chatbot for order-taking. The innovative system, currently powered by Google Cloud’s advanced AI software, has been undergoing successful tests in company-operated restaurants near Columbus, Ohio. Now, the franchisees are gearing up to embrace this cutting-edge technology, with plans to commence testing in 2024.
In response to the challenges posed by elevated labor costs and the sustained popularity of drive-thrus, Wendy’s initially introduced the AI-powered chatbot pilot in May. This move positioned the fast-food giant at the forefront of the AI race within the industry.
Wendy’s didn’t use Microsoft, but using an Google AI Chatbot instead
The AI chatbot, utilizing Google Cloud’s powerful AI algorithms, has demonstrated impressive capabilities. While they aren’t using anything from Microsoft’s Cloud offerings, it’s still an impressive development using AI in our everyday lives. Currently active in four select restaurants, the system has proven its efficiency by autonomously handling a remarkable 86% of orders without requiring intervention from restaurant staff. Wendy’s aims to surpass the 85% target set earlier this year, highlighting the success of this innovative approach.
At the core of Wendy’s AI chatbot system is generative AI, enabling it to create dynamic responses and adapt to customer needs in real time. This marks a significant leap forward in providing a personalized and efficient service, aligning with Wendy’s commitment to enhancing customer satisfaction.
One notable achievement observed during the pilot phase is the substantial reduction in service times. In one of the locations, service times were an impressive 22 seconds faster than the average for Columbus. With the success observed in the initial pilot, Wendy’s is poised to roll out the AI chatbot system to additional locations in the near future.
