Windows 10 Update KB5040525 fixes and improvements

Microsoft releases Windows 10 Update KB5040525: Comprehensive bug fixes and improvements

1. Windows Defender Application Control (WDAC) improvements

  • Prevents a stop error occurring when applying more than 32 policies.
  • Addresses a memory leak issue that could exhaust system memory over time during device provisioning.
  • Fixes app failures related to WDAC Application ID policies.

2. Printing and Universal Print fixes

  • Resolves an issue with the Print Support App where it would stop responding and fail to print when used with a USB device.
  • Addresses communication failures between Universal Print clients and the Universal Print service, which affected printing functions when Web Proxy Auto Discovery (WPAD) was enabled.

3. Windows Backup

  • Fixes a problem where backups would sometimes fail on devices with an Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) system partition (ESP).

4. Additional system improvements

  • Updates the Windows Kernel Vulnerable Driver Blocklist file (DriverSiPolicy.p7b) to include drivers at risk for Bring Your Own Vulnerable Driver (BYOVD) attacks.
  • Addresses an issue with DHCP Option 235, improving the ability of Windows devices to find and use Microsoft Connected Cache (MCC) nodes in their network.

Installation and availability

The KB5040525 update is available as an optional download through Windows Update. Users can access it by navigating to Settings > Windows Update and clicking “Check for updates.” As a preview update, it will not be automatically installed and requires manual user intervention to download and install.

For those preferring manual installation, the update can also be obtained directly from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

Known issues

Microsoft has reported one known issue with this update:

  • Users may be unable to change their account profile picture after installation. When attempting to change the picture through Settings > Account > Your info, an error message with code 0x80070520 may appear. Microsoft is working on a resolution for a future release.

Importance of the update

While KB5040525 is a non-security update, it addresses several critical issues that could impact system performance and user experience. The fixes for WDAC, printing problems, and Windows Backup are particularly noteworthy, as they resolve issues that could potentially disrupt daily operations for many users.

IT administrators and Windows 10 users are encouraged to test this preview update in controlled environments before wider deployment. As with all optional updates, it’s advisable to monitor for any reported issues in the coming weeks before applying the update to critical systems.

This update underscores Microsoft’s commitment to continually improving Windows 10, ensuring better stability and performance for its user base. As Windows 10 version 22H2 continues to receive support, users can expect further refinements and bug fixes in future updates.
