Microsoft Pushes Big Windows 11 Insider Preview Updates Across All Channels

On October 6, 2025, Microsoft rolled out key new Insider Preview builds for Windows 11 across the Beta, Dev, and Canary channels, introducing impactful new features, security adjustments, and substantial UX improvements. Whether experimenting as a desktop enthusiast, developer, or early adopter, these new builds signal significant progress for Windows platforms heading toward 2026.

Each Windows 11 Insider Preview build brings channel-specific features, known issues, and deepened integration with services like Copilot, Windows Hello, and a new OOBE (Out-of-Box Experience), reshaping the Windows experience for millions of testers and IT professionals.

Beta Channel – Build 26120.6772

This build, targeting version 24H2, rolls out several fresh features for Beta users, especially those with Copilot+ PCs:

  • Click to Do (Preview) Upgrades: Now allows object selection within images, streamlining creative workflows. Users can hover over image regions for previews and copy objects directly into other tools or chats with Copilot for AI-driven insights.

  • On-Screen Unit Conversion: Enables instant unit conversion—length, area, volume, weight, temperature, speed—right from onscreen numbers and units, with extended conversions available through Copilot integration (regional availability may vary).

  • Windows Hello ESS for Fingerprint Readers: Enhanced Sign-in Security now extends to external and peripheral fingerprint readers, offering improved sign-in protection for desktops and new Copilot+ PCs.

  • OOBE Account Changes: Crucially, Microsoft has now removed mechanisms for creating a local account during setup. All consumers must use a Microsoft account and an internet connection for initial device configuration, strengthening device provisioning and linking to cloud services.

  • File Explorer Dark Mode Improvements: Dialogs for copy, move, and delete actions—plus confirmation boxes and error dialogs—now fully support dark mode, providing a more cohesive experience.

  • Bug Fixes: Fixes address system tray visibility, app window focus, EFS scaling in File Explorer, camera preview failures, incorrect network adapter speeds, and TPM issues on ARM64 devices.

Known Issues: Touch keyboard launch failures at login, temporarily disabled taskbar animations, some search bugs, Xbox Controller conflicts via Bluetooth.

Dev Channel – Build 26220.6772

The Dev build mirrors most Beta channel upgrades, given parallel development this cycle, but marks the official branch for Windows 11 version 25H2:

  • User Folder Naming: During OOBE, users can now set a custom name for their default user folder (up to 16 Unicode characters).

  • Enhanced Rollout System: Feature rollouts continue incrementally, with toggles allowing Insiders to opt in for earlier feature access.

  • Dev Channel Path: Some features will appear in Beta before Dev, and vice versa, highlighting the independent parallel development structure.

The removal of local-only account creation mechanisms is a major change, eliminating legacy workarounds (e.g., command-line tricks) in the name of security and user consistency. This closes “undocumented backdoors” for setting up devices without a Microsoft account.

Canary Channel – Build 27959

Canary testers, who receive the most experimental features, saw the launch of build 27959, which introduces:

  • Hardware Indicator Positioning: Users can now place brightness, volume, airplane mode, and virtual desktops indicators (flyouts) at the bottom, top left, or top center of the screen, improving accessibility and customization.

  • Keyboard Shortcuts: New shortcuts for inserting En dash (–) and Em dash (—); WIN + Minus for En dash, WIN + Shift + Minus for Em dash, unless Magnifier is running.

  • Share Window Pinning: The Windows share interface now supports pinned apps for quick access.

  • Modern Dialogs: More legacy dialogs now match Windows 11’s aesthetic, another step toward UI modernization.

  • Fixes: Addresses bugchecks on ARM64, context menu improvements in File Explorer, overlay bugs with text scaling, taskbar and system tray accuracy, Start menu screenshot issues, and Windows Hello PIN setup on Entra-domain devices.

Known Issues: Sleep and shutdown issues are under investigation.

A reminder: Switching out of the Canary Channel to lower build numbers requires a clean install due to technical setup constraints.

The End of Local Account Workarounds

A recurring theme across Beta and Dev is the hardening of OOBE to enforce cloud sign-ins. Prior registry hacks, command-line bypasses, and utility scripts for device setup without a Microsoft account are now ineffective. This pushes all new personal Windows setups into the Microsoft ecosystem, excepting enterprise imaging or deployment tools, ensuring better security, device management, and user onboarding.

While this move helps safeguard users by driving critical updates, cloud integration, and service enrollment, it marks a philosophical shift away from the “offline-first” model favored by some power users.
