Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26220.5790: Special Features Now Rolling Out for Dev and Beta Channel Testers

Microsoft is ushering in a fresh era of Windows 11 innovation with the release of Insider Preview Build 26220.5790 (KB5065779), available in the Dev Channel for testers running version 25H2, and mirrored with build 26120.5790 in the Beta Channel for version 24H2 users. This update brings a wealth of new features, critical fixes, and improvements—especially for users of Copilot+ PCs and those eager to test bleeding-edge enhancements before general release.

Spotlight on Copilot+ PC Experiences

Fluid Dictation in Voice Access

Windows 11 is turbocharging accessibility with fluid dictation for voice access, exclusive to Copilot+ PCs. This feature uses on-device small language models (SLMs) to provide seamless, privacy-centric voice dictation. It automatically corrects grammar, punctuation, and filler words as you speak, offering a radically improved text input experience—particularly for those who rely on hands-free computing. This enhancement is enabled by default and currently supports all English locales for Copilot+ PC users. To activate, simply launch voice access and ensure the feature is toggled on in the settings flyout.blogs.windows

Windows Studio Effects on More Cameras

A top request from creators and remote workers: Windows Studio Effects (AI-powered background blur, eye contact, and noise filtering) is now being extended from integrated laptop cameras to a wider array of external and internal cameras. Supported Copilot+ PCs can now enable Studio Effects via Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras, selecting their preferred camera, and toggling the new “Use Windows Studio Effects” option. This allows users to look and sound their best regardless of which camera is in use.

  • Initial rollout targets Intel-powered Copilot+ PCs, with AMD and Snapdragon support coming soon.

Quality-of-Life Upgrades and Improvements

File Explorer Gets Smarter

Efficiency gets a boost with File Explorer Home’s new on-hover actions. Hovering over files now presents commands such as “Open file location” and “Ask Copilot about this file,” allowing quicker access and Copilot integration. These features currently require a Microsoft account, though future support for work or school accounts is planned. (Note: This is not yet active for Insiders in the European Economic Area.)

Agent in Settings

The agent in Settings—Microsoft’s intelligent, context-aware system interface—is beginning rollout to Copilot+ PCs for users with primary display language set to French, building on Microsoft’s localization and AI-driven support experiences.

For Developers

  • “Advanced Settings” for Developers temporarily reverts to the previous experience, with Microsoft planning to restore the new iteration in an upcoming update.

  • Beta and Dev builds may encounter a new PIX on Windows issue: GPU capture playback is currently broken but will be patched by late September. Temporary guidance and private builds are available through the DirectX Discord server or PIX feedback.

Bug Fixes and Reliability Improvements

Microsoft delivers several critical fixes aimed at performance and reliability:

  • Addressed lag and delayed response issues in File Explorer, the taskbar, and browser windows caused by previous flights.

  • Fixed misalignment of taskbar app previews after changing display resolution.

  • Corrected File Explorer context menu flickering and improved the stability of the Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files section.

  • Eliminated a cryptographic provider event error on boot for some users.

Known and Recent Issues

Both Insider channels should note these key issues:

  • Some PCs may bugcheck (crash with a green screen) during hibernation after the previous flight—limit use of hibernate until resolved.

  • In some configurations, audio may stop working due to device driver issues (yellow exclamation in Device Manager). The fix involves updating or manually choosing the correct driver.

  • Xbox Controller usage via Bluetooth may cause system crashes—instructions are provided for uninstalling problematic drivers in Device Manager.

  • File Explorer “Shared” section may appear even if empty.

How to Get These Features

  • To ensure early access to all new features, Dev and Beta Channel users should turn ON the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” toggle under Settings > Windows Update. Many features use Controlled Feature Rollout technology and are delivered to subsets of Insiders before a full rollout.

  • Some improvements and preview features may appear in the Beta Channel before Dev, reflecting parallel development streams in the Windows Insider Program.

Additional Resources and Feedback

For a historical view of releases or to cross-check your current Insider build, view Microsoft’s Flight Hub. Microsoft encourages all testers to file detailed feedback using the built-in Feedback Hub—this ensures your experience will shape the final version of new features.

Windows 11 Build 26220.5790 represents another stride toward a more adaptive and accessible OS, previewing the next phase of AI-powered capabilities, camera innovation, and streamlined workflow tools for the entire Insider community.
