Microsoft has announced significant improvements to its Prism emulation technology in the latest Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27744, released to the Canary Channel. This update marks a substantial leap forward in Windows 11 on ARM capabilities, particularly for running x64 applications.

The latest build introduces expanded CPU feature support in Prism, Microsoft’s emulator for Windows on ARM. This update enables more 64-bit x86 (x64) applications to run under emulation by adding support for crucial CPU features. The enhanced virtual CPU now supports additional extensions to the x86 instruction set architecture, including AVX, AVX2, BMI, FMA, and F16C.

The improved emulation capabilities are already showing practical benefits. Adobe Premiere Pro 25 is now running on ARM devices in the retail version of Windows 11 24H2, demonstrating the potential for creative applications. Performance testing has revealed notable improvements:

  1. 10% improvement in Firefox Speedometer 3.
  2. 8% increase in Cinebench R23 single-core performance.
  3. 4.5% improvement in Cinebench R23 multi-core performance.

Gaming and application compatibility

The update significantly expands gaming possibilities on Windows ARM devices. Microsoft’s collaboration with major anti-cheat providers, including Denuvo Anti-Cheat, BattlEye, and Wellbia XIGNCODE3, ensures broader game compatibility. Over 1,400 popular games are now supported on Copilot+ PCs, with 1,200 titles capable of running at 30+ FPS.

Technical limitations

It’s important to note that the new CPU features are currently limited to x64 applications. Applications using 32-bit components or 32-bit helper programs for CPU feature detection won’t recognize the new capabilities in Prism.

Enterprise and professional applications

The improved emulation layer is particularly significant for professional users. While some applications like ACDSee and Bitwarden work smoothly under emulation, others such as certain antivirus and VPN applications may still face challenges. Microsoft is actively working with developers to increase native ARM64 application availability.

Future outlook

This update represents a crucial step in Microsoft’s commitment to Windows on ARM. With Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus processors offering performance comparable to traditional laptops, the improved emulation capabilities position Windows on ARM as a more viable platform for both consumers and professionals.

The development team is actively seeking feedback from Windows Insiders to ensure optimal performance and compatibility. Users can submit feedback through the Feedback Hub, particularly regarding compatibility issues or performance regressions with specific applications.

This enhancement to Prism emulation technology, combined with the growing ecosystem of native ARM64 applications, suggests a promising future for Windows on ARM devices. As more developers optimize their applications for the platform and emulation technology continues to improve, users can expect an increasingly seamless experience across both native and emulated applications.
