Xbox Game Camp Returns for 2025 with Expanded Virtual Learning Program

Xbox Game Camp Africa 2025: Empowering Innovation Across the Continent with Dynamic 12-Week Virtual ProgramThe surge of innovation in African game development takes another leap forward this year as Xbox Game Camp Africa returns for its third consecutive edition, launching on December 4, 2025, in Cape Town as part of Africa Games Week. Powered by Microsoft’s Xbox division, in partnership with the ID@Xbox Developer Acceleration Program (DAP), this comprehensive 12-week immersive virtual program aims to educate, empower, and connect promising developers and studios across Africa.

A Vision for African Game Development

Microsoft senior director and head of Xbox Game Camp Peter ZetterbergXbox Game Camp remains committed to its founding mission: “Connect with local developers, understand their barriers to growth, and plant seeds of sustainable support for the continent’s game development ecosystem.” According to Peter Zetterberg, senior director and head of Xbox Game Camp, “2025 is the year when we take all our learnings to give back to the most promising talent on the continent.”

Structure and Opportunities: A 12-Week Intensive Journey

Unlike previous years’ two-day conferences, the 2025 camp introduces a 12-week, mentor-supported curriculum for pre-selected professional studios. Participants will engage in weekly training videos, live office hours, one-on-one mentorship with industry veterans, and community networking with over 3,000 Game Camp alumni worldwide. Teams progress from ideation to building a working prototype or vertical slice, culminating in the opportunity to pitch their projects to the ID@Xbox DAP team for potential publication and support.

James Lewis, head of ID@Xbox’s Developer Acceleration Program, shared, “To date, we have partnered with more than 200 studios to help them bring their games to players on Xbox, and have seen more than 75 titles released, including Venba, Botany Manor, and Mullet Madjack, which have all gone on to delight players as part of Xbox Game Pass. We are excited to connect and partner with more studios on the African continent.”

Impact and Growth: Past Editions Set the Stage

The debut Game Camp Africa in 2023 welcomed over 600 participants from 22 countries, delivering 14 sessions featuring 24 speakers. The following year, the program doubled its reach, welcoming over 1,300 participants from 27 of Africa’s 54 countries. These events continually “shine a light on a thriving community of African developers committed to creating games that reflect their stories and cultures.”

Programs have fostered elevated visibility for Africa’s nascent yet vibrant gaming industry, championing game development as a legitimate, viable career path across the continent. In collaboration with Microsoft Africa, Game Camp has helped promote local success stories and sustained growth of the sector.

Success Stories: Kunta Content and the Power of Mentorship

A standout achievement from previous camps is Kenyan studio Kunta Content, which attended Game Camp Africa in 2023 and 2024. With mentorship from Xbox, including Peter Zetterberg, the studio advanced their project “Hiru”—now showcased in a new trailer celebrating African landscapes from the Masai Mara to the Congo desert. “We are beyond excited to finally share a glimpse of the world of Hiru,” said Dean Gichukie, CEO & Game Producer at Kunta Content. “This trailer is a testament to our team’s passion and the incredible support from Xbox, starting with Xbox Game Camp, allowing us to showcase the beauty of the Masai Mara, the mysteries of the Congo, and the starkness of the desert.”

Mobile Gaming Leads the Charge in Africa

The growth of Africa’s gaming industry is being powered by widespread smartphone adoption and the continent’s youthful, digitally connected generation. Mobile gaming, particularly, continues to open doors for creators and players alike, with African teams increasingly well-positioned to develop and launch games reflecting their local stories.

Expanding the Network: Notable Contributors and Partners

Game Camp Africa has benefited from collaboration with leading Microsoft and Xbox teams including Bethesda, Rare, Arkane Lyon, Halo Studios, Mojang, GitHub, the Microsoft African Development Center, and a roster of African studios such as Mekean Games, Usiku Games, Maliyo Games, and Kunta Content. Africa Games Week, the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Information of Morocco, and several regional game clusters and educational organizations have also contributed to the event’s growing success.
