Microsoft is giving the XBOX experience a tune-up across PC, web, and cloud gaming. Starting November 5, XBOX Insiders can begin trying an updated XBOX PC app that Microsoft says launches 60% faster at its best, alongside changes designed to make finding games and connecting with friends less of a chore.
The company is also expanding its refreshed cloud gaming website to more players over the next few weeks and beginning to bring similar navigation updates to supported TVs and VR headsets. In its XBOX Wire announcement, Microsoft says the goal is a faster, simpler experience that feels familiar regardless of where you play.
The XBOX PC app is getting faster—but there’s a catch

The headline improvement is speed. Microsoft says its updated PC app delivers several performance gains compared with the previous experience:
| Part of the XBOX PC app | Microsoft’s claimed improvement |
|---|---|
| App startup | Up to 60% faster |
| Home, Store, and Game Pass pages | Up to 50% faster |
| In-app windows | Up to 65% faster |
Those figures come from Microsoft’s own testing, not independent benchmarks. Actual results can vary depending on your device, internet connection, system configuration, usage, and other factors. They also describe the app interface—not higher frame rates, faster game downloads, or shorter loading screens inside games.
Still, making the launcher quicker is a practical improvement. Getting into your library or opening a page should feel less like something standing between you and the game you want to play.
Your library, friends, and search are getting a refresh
Microsoft isn’t stopping at startup times. The updated XBOX PC app also reorganizes several everyday features.
The Library gets simpler navigation, updated filters, and more ways to organize your collection. Friends and social features move into the main navigation, making it easier to see what people are playing, start a conversation, or join a party.
Search is getting broader, too. Microsoft says players will be able to search across games, installed titles, add-ons, and people from one place. Refreshed game cards, Home and Settings pages, and animations round out the visual changes.
The common thread is fewer obstacles between opening the app and doing something useful—whether that’s finding an installed game or tracking down a friend.
The refreshed XBOX cloud gaming website is reaching more players
The web changes build on the XBOX cloud gaming preview introduced in January. That earlier release let Insiders test a redesigned browser interface and navigation before a broader rollout.
Microsoft now says the updated experience will reach more players automatically over the next few weeks. If you want to check it out sooner, you can head to play.xbox.com.
The refreshed website includes three main improvements:
- A new Library tab brings together games available to you through cloud gaming, including eligible owned games and titles accessible through XBOX Game Pass.
- Desktop mode makes better use of larger displays, giving players more room to browse.
- Appearance options include light and dark modes, plus five new high-contrast options for different visual needs and preferences.
The Library also supports sorting and filtering by details such as recently played games, genre, and input options. Importantly, Microsoft describes it as a home for games you can play through the cloud—not a promise that every game you own is suddenly streamable.
Supported TVs and VR headsets are getting a more familiar interface

Microsoft is also beginning to bring the refreshed look and navigation to XBOX cloud gaming apps on supported TVs and VR headsets.
The company says each version still needs to work for its particular screen, but the basics should feel consistent: finding your games, understanding what you can play, and getting started quickly.
The announcement does not provide a device-by-device rollout schedule or say that every supported TV and headset will receive the changes immediately. For now, this is a rollout getting underway rather than a universal switch happening all at once.
How to try the updated XBOX experience
Access depends on which part of the update you want to use:
| Experience | How to access it |
|---|---|
| Updated XBOX PC app | XBOX Insiders begin receiving the improvements starting November 5 |
| Refreshed cloud gaming website | Visit play.xbox.com, or wait for the automatic rollout over the next few weeks |
| Updated TV and VR apps | Watch for the rollout on supported devices; Microsoft has not provided a complete schedule |
Microsoft has not announced a general-release date for the updated PC app in this post, so players outside the Insider program should not assume the redesign is available to everyone today.
If you want to participate in testing, Microsoft directs Windows users to the XBOX Insider Hub app. You can learn more through the XBOX Insider Program FAQ, while existing testers can find help in the XBOX Insider subreddit.
A useful update if the speed gains hold up
This announcement is less about adding another destination to the XBOX ecosystem and more about making its existing apps easier to use. Faster startup, clearer library tools, and more accessible friends features all target the things players interact with before they launch a game.
The biggest question now is how those improvements feel outside Microsoft’s testing. The performance figures are promising, but the Insider rollout will give players a chance to see how well the updated PC app works on their own hardware.
