Microsoft has officially announced a sweeping set of price increases for its Xbox Series X|S consoles, controllers, and first-party games, marking one of the most significant pricing shifts in the platform’s recent history. These changes, effective May 1st, 2025, impact gamers in the United States, Europe, the UK, Australia, and other markets worldwide, and come amid broader industry trends of rising hardware and software costs.

Xbox Series X|S Console Price Hikes

The new pricing structure for Xbox consoles is substantial. In the US, the Xbox Series S (512GB) jumps from $299.99 to $379.99, an $80 increase. The 1TB version of the Series S now retails for $429.99. The flagship Xbox Series X (1TB) receives a $100 price hike, moving from $499.99 to $599.99. Microsoft is also introducing a digital-only Xbox Series X at $549.99 and a special edition 2TB Galaxy Black model for $729.99.

European markets are seeing similar increases. For example, at major retailers like Micromania in France, the Series X price has risen from €549.99 to €599.99, and the 512GB Series S from €299.99 to €349.99. The 1TB Series S now costs €399.99, up from €349.99.

Accessory and Controller Price Adjustments

It’s not just the consoles: Xbox wireless controllers and headsets are also more expensive. The standard controller now costs $64.99, and the wireless headset is set at $119.99 in the US. These accessory price changes are already reflected in Microsoft’s online store and at major retailers.

First-Party Game Prices Set to Hit $79.99

Perhaps the most notable change for gamers is the increase in first-party Xbox game prices. Starting this holiday season, new Xbox exclusives will retail for up to $79.99 in the US, up from the previous $69.99. This brings Xbox’s pricing in line with recent moves by competitors, such as Nintendo’s Switch 2 launch titles and Sony’s PlayStation 5 games, which have also seen price hikes in recent years.

Xbox Game Pass Remains Unchanged (For Now)

One silver lining for subscribers: the price of Xbox Game Pass, Microsoft’s popular subscription service, will remain unchanged for now. This is notable given that Game Pass prices were increased in June 2023 alongside the last round of hardware price hikes.

Industry Context and Microsoft’s Rationale

These price adjustments follow a period of industry-wide inflation, supply chain pressures, and currency fluctuations. Sony raised PlayStation 5 prices in several regions in 2022 and again in 2025, citing similar economic factors. Nintendo has also increased the cost of accessories and is grappling with pricing for its upcoming Switch 2 console.

Microsoft’s latest financial results show a decline in Xbox hardware sales, but a significant 45% year-over-year increase in PC Game Pass revenue, driven by strong performance from titles like Call of Duty and Minecraft. During the company’s Q3 earnings call, CEO Satya Nadella highlighted Xbox’s leading position in digital sales on both Xbox and PlayStation stores.

What This Means for Gamers

For consumers, these increases mean higher upfront costs for new Xbox hardware and games. The timing-just ahead of the 2025 holiday season-could influence purchasing decisions, especially as families weigh the cost of next-generation gaming. While Xbox Game Pass remains a value proposition for now, the rising price of individual games and hardware may push more players toward subscription-based gaming.

Microsoft’s May 1st 2025 price increases for Xbox Series X|S consoles, accessories, and first-party games represent a significant shift in the gaming landscape. As the industry grapples with economic pressures and evolving business models, gamers will need to adapt to a new pricing reality-one that reflects both the growing costs of development and the premium placed on next-generation experiences.
