The European Union (EU) has issued a legally binding request to Microsoft, demanding information about two of Bing’s AI features: the Copilot chatbot and Image Creator. This move comes as the EU investigates potential risks associated with these AI technologies, such as the creation of deepfakes and the potential for voter manipulation.

Microsoft has until May 27 to comply with the EU’s request or face fines of up to 1% of its global revenue. The EU’s scrutiny of Microsoft’s AI offerings is part of a broader effort to regulate the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence and mitigate potential risks to society.

The EU’s investigation into Bing’s AI features follows a similar inquiry into Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI, the company behind the popular ChatGPT language model. The EU has previously expressed concerns about the potential impact of AI on competition, privacy, and societal values.

Microsoft has stated that it will cooperate with the EU’s investigation and provide the necessary information. The company has emphasized that its AI partnerships and investments are aimed at promoting competition and innovation in the field of artificial intelligence.

The EU’s regulatory scrutiny of AI technologies is not limited to Microsoft. Other tech giants, such as Amazon and Google, are also facing increasing scrutiny from regulators around the world as they develop and deploy AI systems.

As AI technologies become more advanced and ubiquitous, there is a growing need for clear guidelines and regulations to ensure that these technologies are developed and used in a responsible and ethical manner. The EU’s investigation into Bing’s AI features is a step in that direction, aiming to strike a balance between fostering innovation and protecting the public interest.
