Forza Horizon 6 Turns Japan into the Series’ Most Explorable Open World Yet

Forza Horizon 6 officially hits Xbox Game Pass today, May 19, 2026, as Microsoft’s big Wave 1 headliner for the month, and it’s launching straight into the service across Xbox Series X|S, PC, cloud, and supported handhelds. If you’re a Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass subscriber, you can jump into Japan’s open‑world festival without buying the full game, while Premium Upgrade owners have already been racing since early access began on May 15.

Playground Games is taking the Horizon festival to Japan this time around, with Forza Horizon 6 promising the series’ biggest open world yet and a garage of more than 550 real‑world cars at launch. The game is fully optimized for Xbox SeriXbox Series X|S and modern PCs, and it’s also available through Xbox Play Anywhere, so you can buy once and play on both console and PC—or just use Game Pass and start driving.

Microsoft confirmed Forza Horizon 6 as the marquee title in its Xbox Game Pass May 2026 Wave 1 lineup in an Xbox Wire post earlier this month, alongside other May drops like Mixtape, Outbound, Call of the Elder Gods, and Subnautica 2. That post also reiterates that Forza is a true day‑one Game Pass launch: it lands in Game Pass on May 19 for console, PC, cloud, and handheld, with Premium Upgrade players getting up to four days of early access starting May 15.

Forza Horizon 6’s listing on Xbox.com highlights its “discover Japan” pitch, promising dense urban streets, twisty mountain touge roads, and coastal highways that lean into car culture in a way fans have been asking for since the early Horizon games. Between the new setting and a bigger car list, this is easily one of the highest‑profile Game Pass additions of 2026 so far.

If you’re trying to figure out exactly when you can start playing with Game Pass, Forza’s support page lays out a clear schedule: the standard edition included with Game Pass unlocks globally at 12:01 a.m. local time on May 19 on Xbox consoles and the Xbox app for PC. Steam players see a unified midnight Eastern launch, but Game Pass users on console and PC get the “local time” rolling release treatment.

Here’s how it breaks down:

  • Game Pass standard release (console, PC): May 19 at 12:01 a.m. local time in your region.

  • Xbox Cloud Gaming: streaming goes live May 18 at 11:01 p.m. PDT / May 19 at 06:01 a.m. UTC.

  • Premium Upgrade early access (no Game Pass needed, but compatible with it): up to four days early starting May 15, with the same regional unlock pattern.

Microsoft also confirmed that everyone who pre‑ordered or has Game Pass Ultimate/PC Game Pass can pre‑download Forza Horizon 6 so they can play immediately once their region unlocks. Download sizes are hefty—roughly 135 GB on Xbox Series X, 130 GB on Series S, and around 160 GB on PC with an SSD required—so it’s worth getting that install started sooner rather than later.

Game Pass Wave 1: what else is dropping in May?

While Forza Horizon 6 is the obvious star of the show, the May 2026 Game Pass Wave 1 lineup is packed with other notable titles. Microsoft’s Xbox Wire post and follow‑up coverage confirm that narrative adventure Mixtape, cozy builder Outbound, Lovecraftian puzzle sequel Call of the Elder Gods, and underwater survival follow‑up Subnautica 2 are all hitting the service as day‑one launches this month.

That means May shapes up like this for Game Pass players:

  • Mixtape hits on May 7 for cloud, Xbox Series X|S, handheld, and PC as a day‑one Game Pass title.

  • Outbound, a cozy off‑grid builder, joins later in the month with day‑one access through Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.

  • Call of the Elder Gods and Subnautica 2 both land mid‑month as day‑one additions, with Subnautica 2 arriving as a Game Preview title on console, handheld, cloud, and PC.

Forza Horizon 6 anchors that slate as the big AAA entry, but the rest of the lineup helps fill out the month with a nice mix of narrative, survival, and sim/creative experiences. It’s the kind of month where Game Pass subscribers can bounce between massive open‑world racing and smaller, more experimental projects without spending extra money.

Should you buy Forza Horizon 6 or just play it on Game Pass?

Because Forza Horizon 6 is available day one with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, most Xbox and PC players won’t need to buy the standard edition outright to try it. If you’re already subscribed, you can simply download the base game and start playing, then decide later whether you want any DLC or upgrades.

Where purchasing does come into play is with the Premium Edition and Premium Upgrade. Microsoft’s store page outlines that the Premium Edition includes early access, two future expansions, multiple car packs, a Car Pass that adds 30 cars over time, VIP membership, and a Welcome Pack. Game Pass players can pick up the Premium Upgrade on top of their subscription to get those benefits without buying the full game, which is a compelling option if you know you’ll be playing Forza long‑term.

For more casual players who just want to cruise around Japan for a few weeks, sticking with Game Pass alone is likely the smarter value play. The series traditionally gets years of post‑launch support, though, so if Forza Horizon 6 becomes your main game, the Premium Upgrade may end up cheaper than buying future expansions and add‑ons piecemeal.
