The investment, orchestrated in collaboration with Kenya’s Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, encompasses several pivotal components designed to enhance the region’s digital infrastructure and capabilities.

1. State-of-the-art green data center

A cornerstone of the initiative is the construction of a state-of-the-art green data center. This facility, to be built by G42 and its partners, will host Microsoft Azure services, establishing a new East Africa Cloud Region. This development is expected to significantly enhance cloud computing capabilities and data storage solutions in the region.

2. Local-language AI model development and research

The initiative also prioritizes the development and research of AI models tailored to local languages. This effort aims to make advanced AI technologies more accessible and relevant to the local population, fostering greater inclusion and technological adoption.

3. East Africa Innovation Lab and AI digital skills training

An East Africa Innovation Lab will be established, coupled with extensive AI digital skills training programs. This lab will serve as a hub for innovation, providing resources and support for local startups and tech enthusiasts. The training programs are designed to equip individuals with the necessary skills to thrive in the digital economy.

4. Expanding internet connectivity in Kenya

The initiative will also focus on broadening internet connectivity across Kenya. By leveraging resources from G42 and its UAE ecosystem partners, the project aims to enhance both international and domestic marine and terrestrial connectivity. This expansion is crucial for ensuring that more people have access to the digital tools and resources necessary for economic growth.

Strategic partnerships and support

The letter of intent for this initiative was signed by Microsoft, G42, and Kenya’s Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, with support from the governments of the United States and the United Arab Emirates. This collaboration underscores the global significance of the project and the commitment of multiple stakeholders to Kenya’s digital future.

Peng Xiao, Group Chief Executive Officer of G42, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “In partnership with Microsoft, we are excited to work with the Kenyan government to usher in a transformative era for the digital ecosystem in Kenya and the region. By establishing a green data center and developing AI tailored to the local culture, G42 is committed to fostering sustainable technological growth.”

Impact on Kenya and East Africa

This initiative is poised to have a profound impact on Kenya and the broader East African region. By enhancing digital infrastructure, promoting AI research, and expanding internet connectivity, the project aims to drive economic development, create job opportunities, and position Kenya as a leader in the digital economy.

The collaboration between G42 and Microsoft, as well as the Kenyan government represents a significant step towards a more connected and technologically advanced future for East Africa. As the project progresses, it will be closely watched as a model for similar initiatives in other regions.
