Introducing “Vibe Working” in Microsoft 365 Copilot
Microsoft’s Office Product Group, led by Corporate Vice President Sumit Chauhan, revealed “Vibe Working” for Microsoft 365 Copilot, marking a new era in teamwork and productivity. This concept introduces two major features, Agent Mode and Office Agent, that dramatically advance how users generate, analyze, and iterate documents and presentations in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint—all with the help of Copilot’s latest AI reasoning models.
What Is Vibe Working?
Vibe working builds on what “vibe coding” accomplished for developers by enabling human-AI agent collaboration for knowledge work. Users steer Copilot with intuitive prompts, and the AI executes multi-step workflows, guided by direct user feedback—all within familiar Office environments. After initial rollout to select users via the Frontier program, both Agent Mode and Office Agent position Copilot as a pivotal assistant in daily enterprise, personal, and creative tasks.
Agent Mode: AI-Powered Excel and Word
Agent Mode directly integrates Copilot into Excel and Word. Instead of simple, one-off automation or template-driven output, Agent Mode combines Office artifacts and the latest reasoning models from OpenAI to “speak Excel” and “vibe write” in Word. This means users don’t have to be experts to unlock advanced modeling, analysis, or polished document design
Agent Mode in Excel
Excel, long a standard for business modeling and data analysis, now puts copilot-driven expertise at every user’s fingertips:
-
Native Excel Expertise: Agent Mode handles formulas, multi-sheet orchestration, and visualization.
-
Iterative Problem Solving: It evaluates, fixes, and validates results just like a human data analyst.
-
Democratized Modeling: Benchmarking via SpreadsheetBench shows Agent Mode reaching 57.2% accuracy on advanced spreadsheet workflows.

Sample Prompts:
-
“Run a full analysis on this sales data set. Make it visual.”
-
“Create a financial monthly close report for a bike shop business.”
-
“Build a loan calculator with dynamic payment schedules and summary charts.”
-
“Design a personal budget tracker with conditional formatting and monthly summaries.”
Try Agent Mode in Excel on the web today by installing the Excel Labs add-in. Agent Mode is rolling out soon for desktop.
Agent Mode in Word
Millions of Word documents are created every month—now, AI helps make them sharper and more impactful:
-
Conversational Creation: Tell Copilot your goal (e.g., “summarize September feedback and highlight trends”), and it provides drafts, refinements, and asks clarifying questions as needed.
-
Editing and Formatting: Copilot implements style guides, integrates external references, and polishes headers, formatting, and branding.
-
Faster Iteration: Users can quickly apply data updates, clarify executive summaries, and update visual styles with just a few words.
Example Prompts:
-
“Update the September monthly report using the latest email data and summarize key changes.”
-
“Revise the project update with a bulleted list and conclusion section.”
-
“Apply branding updates and italicize external partner names throughout.”

Office Agent: Copilot Chat Goes Agentic
Office Agent takes the chat-first interface of Copilot and supercharges it for payoffs in both document drafting and presentation creation, powered by Anthropic’s advanced models.
Chat-Created Documents—Word and PowerPoint
Instead of toggling between apps, users can request high-quality Word documents and PowerPoint decks directly in Copilot Chat:
-
Intent Clarification: Office Agent asks questions to refine topics, audience, design preferences, and length.
-
Advanced Research: Harnesses web search and chain-of-thought reasoning to find trends, summarize data, and curate visuals for presentations.
-
Instant Content Quality: Outputs ready-to-use presentations and reports with structure, style, and accuracy, paving the way for further collaborative editing.
Scenario Prompts:
-
“Create a deck summarizing the top 5 athleisure market trends.”
-
“Draft a pop-up kitchen business plan for a Philadelphia event, with cost and compliance slides.”
-
“Design slides for a company retirement savings program, mixing numbers, visuals, and analogies.”
-
“Generate a report analyzing influencer marketing in coffee brands.”
