If you’ve ever glanced at your Windows taskbar and wondered why there are two nearly identical Copilot icons staring back at you, Microsoft is finally doing something about it. The company has started merging its consumer Copilot app and its Microsoft 365 Copilot app into a single, unified experience, and it’s the clearest sign yet that the long-rumored Copilot super app is actually coming together.

The Copilot super app change was first reported by The Verge’s Jess Weatherbed, who noted that both personal and work accounts will move to the new app, which keeps the “Microsoft Copilot” name but gets a fresh icon. In Microsoft’s own words, the updated app “combines the best of Copilot chat and image creation, with the power of Microsoft 365 for your work.” Basically, whichever Copilot app you’re already using becomes the one app going forward, and the awkward icon duplication finally goes away.

The rollout isn’t happening all at once. Microsoft says the mobile and web versions will start going out worldwide in mid-August, with Windows and Mac desktop apps following in mid-September. If you’re currently on the standalone Copilot app, you’ll be prompted to download the new unified version but keep your existing chat history. If you’re a Microsoft 365 Copilot user, you’ll just notice some minor navigation tweaks, the new icon, and free access to Copilot chat baked right in. Some Windows Insiders are already starting to see the changes this week.

This merge isn’t a random UI cleanup — it’s the foundation for something much bigger. Back on Microsoft’s July 29 earnings call, CEO Satya Nadella confirmed the company is building a full Copilot super app that will bring together Copilot chat, GitHub Copilot’s coding tools, the Copilot Cowork collaboration agent, and a new paid “Autopilot” tier of background AI agents into one app spanning both consumer and business use. Internally, the project has reportedly been called “Copilot Fusion” and “Delivering One Copilot,” and Nadella has said Microsoft is targeting a launch before the end of this quarter.

This week’s app merger is essentially step one of that plan — get everyone onto one Copilot shell before Microsoft starts layering in coding tools, autonomous agents, and unified billing later this year.

Other Copilot News Making Waves This Week

The app merger isn’t happening in isolation. A few other Copilot stories are worth keeping an eye on heading into mid-August:

  • Copilot Podcasts and Copilot Labs are getting cut. As part of the same consolidation effort, Microsoft is discontinuing the auto-generated audio summary feature and its experimental feature-testing channel, both due to low usage. August 2026 is the working deadline, though Microsoft hasn’t pinned an exact date on the Message Center yet.

  • Classic Outlook is getting the new Copilot entry point. Microsoft is rolling a consistent Copilot access point — already live in other Outlook versions, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint — out to classic Outlook for Windows this month.

It’s clear Microsoft is in full cleanup-and-consolidate mode with Copilot right now, trimming underused features while quietly building toward that single Copilot super app it’s promised for later this year.
