XBOX Free Play Days is back for another weekend, and this time the headliner is one of the most talked-about co-op games of the last year. Starting today, Thursday, August 13, and running through Sunday, August 16, Xbox Game Pass members get free access to Sunderfolk and Asdivine Cross, no purchase required.
2 Games This Free Play Days Weekend
The big draw here is Sunderfolk, a tactical co-op RPG from Secret Door, a studio built by former Blizzard developers. What makes it stand out is the phone-as-controller gimmick — instead of everyone needing their own copy or controller, your phone becomes your character sheet and control pad while the game runs on the TV, so one copy covers the whole group. It’s been getting a ton of praise since launch, currently sitting at a 93% “Very Positive” rating on Steam from nearly 2,000 reviews. If you’ve got a friend group looking for a low-effort game night, this is the one to grab this weekend.
The second title, Asdivine Cross, is a more traditional JRPG pick for anyone who wants a deeper single-player dive. It’s a bigger time investment too — expect somewhere in the 40 to 50 hour range if you’re chasing full completion, with 17 achievements up for grabs along the way.
Heads up though: unlike some recent Free Play Days weekends that opened certain titles to everyone regardless of subscription, this one requires an active Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate membership to play either game. There’s no free-for-all option this time around.
Bonus: Gears of War: E-Day Open Beta Is Also Live
If you burn through Sunderfolk and Asdivine Cross quickly, the Gears of War: E-Day open beta is running at the same time this weekend. It’s not officially part of the Free Play Days program, so don’t expect any achievements to carry over, but it’s a solid extra reason to keep your Xbox on this weekend if you’re a Gears fan.
How to Grab These XBOX Free Play Days Games
Jumping in is simple: head to the Xbox Store, search for either game, and you’ll see an “Install” or “Try for Free” prompt if you’re subscribed to Game Pass. On console, you can also go to the Subscriptions tab in the Store and scroll down to the Free Play Days collection to find everything in one place. Just remember, this is a trial — you won’t keep access to either game once the promotion wraps up Sunday night unless you buy it outright, though any progress and achievements earned will typically stick with your account if you decide to purchase later.
