Microsoft has announced the establishment of a new AI London hub, under the banner of Microsoft AI. This initiative marks a pivotal moment in the tech giant’s efforts to advance consumer AI products and research, including the notable Copilot service. The London hub, dubbed “Microsoft AI London,” is set to become a cornerstone in the development of state-of-the-art language models, infrastructure, and tooling for foundational models, fostering collaboration across Microsoft’s AI teams and with key partners such as OpenAI.

Leading the charge at the new hub is Jordan Hoffmann, a distinguished AI scientist and engineer with a rich background at Inflection and DeepMind. Hoffmann’s leadership is expected to drive innovation and excellence within the hub, which will be located in Microsoft’s London Paddington office. The establishment of Microsoft AI London is a testament to the UK’s rich pool of AI talent and expertise, with Microsoft committing to a significant, long-term investment in the region. The company has announced plans to actively recruit the best AI scientists and engineers, signaling a robust hiring campaign in the coming weeks and months.

Mustafa Suleyman, EVP and CEO of Microsoft AI, expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, highlighting the UK’s commitment to advancing AI responsibly and with a safety-first approach. Suleyman, a British citizen himself, emphasized the importance of the UK’s AI ecosystem and the potential for driving investment, innovation, and economic growth through this new hub. The decision to establish the hub in the UK reflects Microsoft’s ambition to contribute meaningfully to the country’s AI landscape.

The Microsoft AI London hub is poised to complement Microsoft’s existing presence in the UK, including the Microsoft Research Cambridge lab, renowned for its contributions to AI, cloud, and productivity research. This initiative builds on Microsoft’s recently announced £2.5 billion investment aimed at upskilling the UK workforce for the AI era and developing the infrastructure necessary to power the AI economy. This includes a commitment to bring 20,000 of the most advanced GPUs to the country by 2026.

As Microsoft continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible with AI, the new London hub stands as a beacon of innovation and collaboration. The tech giant’s investment in the UK’s AI sector is not only a boon for the local economy and talent pool but also a significant step towards realizing the transformative potential of artificial intelligence on a global scale. Stay tuned for more updates as Microsoft AI London begins its journey to shape the future of AI and extend its benefits across the UK and beyond.
