Microsoft, in collaboration with the Institute of Science and Technology Australia and ETH Zurich, has unveiled an innovative cybersecurity competition called the LLMail-Inject challenge, offering participants a chance to share a $10,000 prize pool by testing the security boundaries of AI systems.

The challenge centers around a simulated LLM-integrated email service that processes user requests and generates responses through a large language model. Participants must attempt to compromise the system’s security by crafting specially designed emails containing hidden prompt injections.

  1. Successfully bypass delivery filters.
  2. Avoid detection by security systems.
  3. Execute intended commands when processed by the LLM.

This challenge addresses critical security concerns in enterprise LLM deployments. Prompt injection attacks have emerged as a significant threat, capable of manipulating AI systems into performing unauthorized actions or exposing sensitive information.
