Microsoft, in collaboration with the Institute of Science and Technology Australia and ETH Zurich, has unveiled an innovative cybersecurity competition called the LLMail-Inject challenge, offering participants a chance to share a $10,000 prize pool by testing the security boundaries of AI systems.
LLMail-Inject: Adaptive Prompt Injection Challenge
The challenge centers around a simulated LLM-integrated email service that processes user requests and generates responses through a large language model. Participants must attempt to compromise the system’s security by crafting specially designed emails containing hidden prompt injections.
The primary goal is to bypass the system’s prompt injection defenses and convince the LLM to execute unauthorized commands when processing email queries. Participants must demonstrate their ability to craft deceptive emails that can trigger specific actions, such as unauthorized API calls.
The competition presents multiple scenarios with varying levels of attacker knowledge. Successful participants must ensure their crafted emails can:
- Successfully bypass delivery filters.
- Avoid detection by security systems.
- Execute intended commands when processed by the LLM.
This challenge addresses critical security concerns in enterprise LLM deployments.
