Windows App

The Windows App, Microsoft’s unified gateway to virtualization solutions, has reached a significant milestone with its expansion to Android devices. Now available in public preview through the Google Play Store, the app supports devices running Android 11 and above, including tablets, smartphones, and head-mounted displays. This expansion complements the existing availability on Windows, macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and web browsers.

Windows 365 Link

A standout announcement is the introduction of Windows 365 Link, Microsoft’s first purpose-built Cloud PC device. This innovative hardware solution enables users to connect to Windows 365 within seconds, featuring:

  1. Cloud-powered performance with simplified IT management.
  2. Local hardware acceleration for video conferencing.
  3. Local redirection of web multimedia content.
  4. High-fidelity experience matching local PC performance.

Enhanced video coding and performance

The platform now supports High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC/H.265), delivering:

  1. 25-50% better data compression compared to AVC/H.264.
  2. Improved video quality at identical bitrates.
  3. Enhanced graphical performance in low-bandwidth conditions.
  4. GPU acceleration support.
  5. Near-local performance with Windows 365 GPU-enabled Cloud PCs.

Relayed RDP Shortpath network connectivity

Microsoft reveals major updates to an already extra special Windows Cloud experience: Windows 365 Link, Android support, and enhanced Teams integration

Microsoft has rolled out a major upgrade to its Relayed RDP Shortpath technology for Windows 365 and Azure Virtual Desktop users. This new feature tackles the challenge of symmetric NAT environments by implementing TURN (Traversal Using Relays around NAT) protocol. The technology creates indirect UDP connections, significantly improving data transmission speed and reducing latency. This advancement leverages the same networking principles used in Azure Communication Services, ensuring robust device-to-device connectivity even in complex network environments.

Streamlined OneDrive integration

A significant improvement comes to Azure Virtual Desktop’s RemoteApp service with seamless OneDrive integration. Users can now access their OneDrive files directly while using RemoteApp applications, eliminating the need for manual file synchronization. The system automatically launches OneDrive alongside RemoteApp sessions, creating a fluid workflow between cloud storage and virtual applications. This integration bridges the gap between cloud storage and virtual desktop environments, making file management more intuitive and efficient.

Teams integration with SlimCore

Microsoft has revolutionized Teams integration through the new SlimCore plugin model, offering faster meeting join times and reduced call drops. There is also the latest codec support and native Windows client parity. There’s administrative benefits as well, including automatic updates without user intervention, no reboot requirements, a streamlined support process, and reduced dependency on VDI partner stacks.

Future developments

Microsoft

Microsoft has also previewed upcoming features that will enhance the Windows cloud experience, including:

  1. Integration of Copilot+ PC capabilities with Windows 365.
  2. Enhanced search functionality.
  3. Improved AI-powered experiences.
  4. Seamless integration between edge and cloud computing.

These updates represent a significant step forward in Microsoft’s vision of cloud-based computing. The improvements in video coding, networking, and application integration demonstrate Microsoft’s commitment to delivering a seamless, high-performance cloud experience that rivals traditional desktop computing.

The introduction of Windows 365 Link, combined with the expanded platform support and enhanced Teams integration, positions Microsoft strongly in the enterprise computing market. These developments particularly benefit organizations with remote workforces and those requiring flexible, secure access to Windows environments across various devices.
