Microsoft has taken a significant step forward in its ongoing mission to bridge the global digital divide with the launch of a refreshed Digital Equity Data Dashboard. This latest update, announced on October 16, 2024, by Teresa Hutson, Corporate Vice President of Technology for Fundamental Rights, provides policymakers with crucial insights into broadband accessibility across the United States.

The updated dashboard incorporates current data from various authoritative sources, including the FCC, United States Census Bureau, Code.org, Broadband Now, and Microsoft itself. This comprehensive dataset allows federal, state, and local policymakers to gain a deeper understanding of the factors contributing to the digital divide in communities throughout the country.

One of the key features of this refresh is the ability to track historical broadband data, enabling analysis of trends and progress resulting from both government and private sector investments. The dashboard reveals encouraging improvements across all states, including Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia, with notable increases in both broadband connections and household computer ownership.

Significant progress in low-income households

A particularly promising finding from the new data is the substantial increase in internet connectivity among households earning less than $20,000 annually. This demographic experienced an average increase of over 10.8 percentage points in internet connectivity compared to previous metrics, translating to nearly 325,000 more connected households in this income bracket.

Regional highlights

The dashboard highlights several states and territories that have made remarkable strides in digital equity:

  • Connectivity improvement: Puerto Rico, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama saw the greatest improvement in overall connectivity, resulting in 581,000 more households gaining internet access.
  • Broadband subscriptions: Arkansas, Mississippi, Puerto Rico, Idaho, and Tennessee led in improvements for households subscribing to broadband services (cable, fiber optic, or DSL).
  • Digital device ownership: The District of Columbia, Delaware, Puerto Rico, New Mexico, and Texas showed the most significant improvements in households owning laptops or desktop computers, with nearly 109,000 more households now equipped with these devices.

Microsoft’s ongoing commitment

This dashboard update is part of Microsoft’s broader Airband Initiative, launched in 2017 to address the rural broadband gap in the United States. Since its inception, the initiative has expanded its focus beyond specific technologies like TV White Spaces to a technology-neutral approach, partnering with various providers to leverage fiber, fixed wireless, satellite, and other innovative solutions.

The company’s efforts, combined with significant government investments through programs like the CARES Act, ARPA, and IIJA, have yielded impressive results. Microsoft’s internet service provider partners have secured over $725 million in government infrastructure funding awards, with approximately 80% directed towards rural communities.

Global impact and future goals

Microsoft’s commitment extends beyond U.S. borders, with global partnerships bringing coverage to nearly 100 million previously unserved and underserved people worldwide. The company has set an ambitious goal of reaching 250 million people with meaningful connectivity by the end of 2025.

As the digital landscape continues to evolve, Microsoft emphasizes the critical need for continued collaboration among governments, the private sector, and philanthropic organizations. The company urges stakeholders to create enabling regulatory environments, invest in innovative technologies, and advocate for digital inclusion to ensure no one is left behind in the digital age.

With the refreshed Digital Equity Data Dashboard, Microsoft reaffirms its dedication to using data, technology, and partnerships to bridge the global digital divide, paving the way for a more connected and equitable future.
