Qualcomm has announced the cancellation of its highly anticipated Snapdragon Dev Kit, a miniature Windows 11 on ARM PC that was set to revolutionize app development for the platform. The decision, communicated via email to customers on October 18, 2024, has sent shockwaves through the developer community and raised questions about the future of Windows 11 on ARM.

The Snapdragon Dev Kit, originally slated for release in June 2024, was designed to coincide with the launch of the first wave of Copilot Plus PCs. However, the project faced multiple delays, and now Qualcomm has decided to pull the plug entirely, citing quality concerns.

In the email to customers, Qualcomm stated that the mini PC “comprehensively has not met our usual standards of excellence,” leading to the decision to “pause this product and the support of it, indefinitely.” The company has promised full refunds to those who placed orders for the device.

The HDMI port conundrum

While Qualcomm has not provided specific details about the issues plaguing the Dev Kit, industry insiders and tech enthusiasts have speculated that a seemingly simple component may be at the heart of the problem: the HDMI port.

YouTuber Jeff Geerling, one of the few who received the Dev Kit before its cancellation, performed a teardown of the device. His analysis revealed that while all the necessary chips for an internal DisplayPort to HDMI conversion were present, the actual HDMI port was missing. This discovery aligns with reports that Qualcomm had planned to ship the device with a USB-C to HDMI dongle instead of a built-in HDMI port.

Richard Campbell, founder of the DEVIntersection conferences, suggested on a recent TWiT episode that the HDMI port might have failed FCC compliance testing, potentially causing the production delays and ultimate cancellation.

Windows 11 on ARM development

The cancellation of the Snapdragon Dev Kit is a significant setback for the Windows on ARM ecosystem. The device was intended to be a crucial tool for developers to port their applications to the ARM architecture, supporting Microsoft and Qualcomm’s push for wider adoption of Windows on ARM.

Despite this setback, there have been some positive developments in the Windows on ARM space. Google has announced plans to bring its Drive app to the platform later this year, while NordVPN and ExpressVPN launched ARM-native versions last month. Additionally, the Arc browser is now ARM64 native, showcasing ongoing support from major software developers.

Looking ahead

As Qualcomm prepares for its upcoming Snapdragon summit later this month, the company may need to address its strategy for desktop PCs running Windows on ARM. The cancellation of the Dev Kit has overshadowed recent successes in app adoption and raised questions about the company’s commitment to the platform beyond mobile devices.

For developers who were eagerly anticipating the Snapdragon Dev Kit, alternative solutions may need to be explored. Microsoft and Qualcomm will likely need to provide new resources and tools to ensure that app development for Windows on ARM continues to progress.

The cancellation of the Snapdragon Dev Kit serves as a reminder of the challenges faced in hardware development, even for established companies like Qualcomm. As the tech industry continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible with ARM-based computing, setbacks like this highlight the importance of rigorous quality control and the complexities involved in bringing new devices to market.

As the dust settles on this unexpected development, all eyes will be on Qualcomm’s next moves in the Windows on ARM space, and how they plan to support developers in the absence of the much-anticipated Dev Kit.
