  • Infrastructure expansion: Microsoft plans to deploy 20,000 advanced graphics processing units (GPUs) across its data centers in Sandviken, Gavle, and Staffanstorp. These GPUs, sourced from Nvidia and potentially AMD, will enhance the company’s ability to support complex AI applications.
  • AI skills training: Over the next three years, Microsoft aims to train 250,000 Swedes in AI skills, targeting various sectors including education, public services, and private enterprises.
  • Renewable energy commitment: The tech giant has procured nearly 1,000 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy in Sweden, aligning with its sustainability goals and ensuring a green energy supply for its data centers.

Brad Smith

Brad Smith, Microsoft’s Vice Chair and President, highlighted Sweden’s innovative landscape and abundant clean energy resources as pivotal factors in the decision. “Sweden is one of Europe’s most innovative countries, and embracing AI is crucial to maintaining its leadership position,” Smith stated. The investment also aligns with Microsoft’s broader strategy to leverage renewable energy, with significant partnerships such as the one with state-owned power company Vattenfall AB.

AI and disinformation

In a related development, Smith addressed concerns about the use of AI in disinformation campaigns during the upcoming European Parliamentary elections. While acknowledging the risks, he noted that Microsoft had not observed significant AI-driven disinformation efforts in these elections so far. The company remains vigilant and plans to release a detailed report on the topic.

This investment is part of a broader trend where tech companies are increasingly focusing on Europe for data center expansions, driven by the rising demand for cloud services and AI capabilities. Microsoft’s commitment to the Nordic region and its investment in Swedish AI and cloud infrastructure is expected to catalyze further technological advancements and economic growth.
