The Yakuza series has been a massive hit for Sega, selling over 16 million copies across eight main entries since its debut on the PlayStation 2 in 2005. The open-world action games are renowned for their cinematic storytelling, vividly depicting the harsh realities and complex codes of honor within Yakuza organizations. Notably, the games are also available on Xbox and PC via Xbox Game Pass, making them accessible to a broader audience.
Yakuza crime drama series, Like a Dragon
Amazon’s Like a Dragon aims to faithfully capture the essence of the games while expanding the Yakuza universe for television audiences. The series will delve into the lives of various Yakuza members, their families, and their struggles to survive in the criminal underworld of modern-day Japan.
“We are thrilled to bring the rich, immersive world of Yakuza to our Prime Video subscribers,” said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios. “This gritty crime drama will offer an authentic portrayal of Yakuza culture, exploring themes of loyalty, honor, and redemption against the backdrop of Tokyo’s red-light districts.”
The show’s writers have worked closely with Sega and the game’s creators to ensure an accurate representation of Yakuza traditions and hierarchies. Extensive research has been conducted, including consultations with former Yakuza members and law enforcement officials.
Star-studded cast and crew
The Yakuza series has assembled an impressive cast and crew, blending Japanese and international talent. Acclaimed Japanese actor Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai, Inception) is set to play a prominent role, likely portraying a high-ranking Yakuza boss.
Joining Watanabe is rising star Hana Sugisaki, who will portray a young woman caught up in the Yakuza world. The series will also feature familiar faces from the video games, with fan-favorite characters making appearances.
Behind the camera, the show will be executive produced by Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island) and Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings). Cretton will also direct several episodes, bringing his expertise in blending action and drama.
Amazon going all out
Amazon has spared no expense in bringing the Yakuza series to life, with a reported budget of over $100 million for the first season alone. Filming will take place on location in Tokyo and other parts of Japan, capturing the authentic sights and sounds of the Yakuza world.
The series will also incorporate elements of the games’ signature combat and cinematic flair, promising intense action sequences choreographed by renowned stunt teams.
With its compelling storytelling, authentic representation, and high production values, the Yakuza crime drama series Like a Dragon on Amazon Prime is poised to captivate audiences and introduce the beloved franchise to a whole new generation of fans.
