Microsoft and Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) have announced a milestone achievement in their elevAIte Indonesia program, with more than 1.2 million Indonesians trained in artificial intelligence (AI) skills just eight months after its launch. The initiative has rapidly evolved into a national movement uniting teachers, students, small business owners, and civil servants under a shared mission to build an AI-literate society.
Unveiled in late 2024 as part of Microsoft’s US$1.7 billion investment in Indonesia, elevAIte Indonesia supports the country’s “Golden Indonesia 2045” vision, which aims to transform the nation into a global digital leader by mid-century. The program’s name blends “Elevate” and “AI,” symbolizing Indonesia’s rise through technology and human capital development.

Indonesia currently needs over 600,000 new digital talents per year to sustain its digital transformation goals. Through elevAIte, Microsoft and Komdigi are addressing this gap with AI training accessible to all, regardless of technical background. The program includes:
-
Online and in-person learning through community-centered workshops
-
Hands-on hackathons and “promptathons” for practical skill-building
-
Localized Indonesian-language modules for digital inclusivity
-
Partnerships with 22 ecosystem organizations, including educational and nonprofit institutions.
In total, over 695,000 learners have completed training, with more than 400,000 earning AI certifications—covering both technical competencies (like Azure AI and Copilot) and creative fields such as AI-assisted design and storytelling.
Empowering Real Changemakers

Beyond the numbers, elevAIte Indonesia has created a wave of grassroots innovation stories:
-
Teachers like Ahmad Zikrillah integrate AI into classrooms, combining DevOps and machine learning to create hybrid learning tools accessible even offline.
-
Entrepreneurs and parents like Diana Putri use Microsoft Copilot to explore business opportunities and education strategies for families in remote regions.
-
Students at institutions like SMP Labschool Jakarta and SD Nasima Semarang use Minecraft Education to learn coding, sustainability, and problem-solving through AI-driven projects.hrsea.economictimes.
Microsoft Asia’s Arief Suseno, AI National Skills Director, emphasized that the greatest success lies not just in participation numbers but in community-driven progress:
“elevAIte Indonesia is not just about rapid scaling—it’s about ensuring everyone, wherever they are, benefits from digital advancement,” he said.
The Five Pillars of elevAIte Indonesia
The initiative’s foundation is built on five strategic pillars designed to connect Indonesians with AI opportunities inclusively.
| Pillar | Focus Area | Example Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Government Empowerment | Training civil servants to deliver efficient digital services | Digital policy design using Copilot |
| Education Innovation | AI learning in schools and universities | Minecraft Education integration |
| Industry Modernization | Supporting MSMEs and enterprises with AI tools | AI business analytics workshops |
| Community Inclusion | Upskilling women and disabled communities | NU Care & MIEE partnerships |
| Individual Empowerment | Accessible AI learning for all citizens | AI Skills Navigator in Bahasa Indonesia |
These pillars ensure AI literacy extends beyond urban centers into villages, classrooms, and households, reaching demographics historically excluded from the digital economy.
AI for a Responsible and Inclusive Future

Microsoft Indonesia’s President Director Dharma Simorangkir reaffirmed that responsible AI adoption remains central to the company’s mission:
“AI transformation is not just technological—it’s a national transformation. Together with the government and local partners, we are committed to enabling all Indonesians to benefit from AI responsibly,” he noted.
Through elevAIte Indonesia, Microsoft aims to sustain momentum toward sustainable innovation, inclusive participation, and ethical AI principles. As Indonesia pushes toward 2045, the program stands as a model for how global partnerships can empower local potential—turning digital ambition into lasting opportunity for all.
