One of the biggest complaints about Windows 11 since its 2021 launch was the locked Taskbar. Microsoft removed the ability to drag or move the Windows 11 Taskbar to the top, left, or right edgesโsomething available in every previous version of Windows for decades. Users wanted the flexibility for ultrawide monitors, vertical productivity setups, more vertical screen space on laptops, or simply personal preference.
In 2026, Microsoft finally responded as part of its Windows quality initiative. Native controls for moving the Windows 11 Taskbar to any edge (top, bottom, left, or right) and making it smaller began rolling out to Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel (starting around build 26300.8493 in May 2026) and later expanded to the Beta channel. These improvements are expected to reach all users more broadly with the Windows 11 26H2 update in the fall of 2026.
Until the feature fully arrives on stable releases for everyone, this comprehensive guide covers:
- The official native method (Insiders and upcoming 26H2)
- How to make the Taskbar smaller and adjust alignment
- The best free workarounds for non-Insiders (ExplorerPatcher and Windhawk)
- Additional customizations, limitations, multi-monitor tips, and troubleshooting
Check Your Windows Version First
- Press
Windows key + R, typewinver, and press Enter.

- Note your version (e.g., 24H2, 25H2, 26H1/26H2 preview) and build number.

- For native support, you generally need a recent Insider build (Experimental or Beta channel) with the feature enabled. Stable versions as of mid-August 2026 typically still require workarounds.
You can also open Settings > System > About for version details.

Method 1: Native Way โ Move the Windows 11 Taskbar Using Settings (Insiders / 26H2)
This is the official method Microsoft is restoring. It works in supported Insider builds and will become standard with 26H2.
How to Join the Windows Insider Program (If Needed)
Only do this on a secondary PC or if you accept potential instability:
- Go to Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program.
- Click Get started and link a Microsoft account.
- Choose the Experimental or Beta channel (Experimental gets features earliest).
- Restart and check for updates until you receive a qualifying build (e.g., 26300.xxxx series or later Beta builds).
Some users may need to enable feature flags via Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program > Feature flags or tools like ViveTool for full availability.
Change Windows 11 Taskbar Position
- Right-click an empty area on the Taskbar and select Taskbar settings.
(Alternatively: Open Settings withWindows key + I> Personalization> Taskbar.) - Scroll down and expand Taskbar behaviors.
- Look for the Taskbar position option (it often includes live thumbnail previews of each layout).
- Select one of the following:
- Bottom (default)
- Top
- Left
- Right
- The Taskbar moves immediately. Start menu, Search, system tray flyouts, tooltips, and animations generally adapt to the new position.
Icon alignment options (also under Taskbar behaviors):
- When the Taskbar is on top or bottom: Choose Left or Center.
- When the Taskbar is on left or right: Choose Top or Center.
Vertical Taskbars support โNever combineโ taskbar buttons + labels, showing individual labeled windows for easier multitasking.
Make the Taskbar Smaller
Microsoft improved the size options so you can reduce both the Taskbar height and the icons (unlike earlier incomplete โsmaller buttons onlyโ versions).
- In the same Taskbar behaviors section, find Show smaller taskbar buttons (or the newer dedicated Taskbar size option in later builds).
- Choose:
- Always โ Makes both the Taskbar height and icons smaller for maximum screen space.
- When taskbar is full โ Keeps normal size until crowded, then shrinks.
- Never โ Default larger size.

- In some builds you may also see a clearer Windows 11 Taskbar size dropdown with Default or Small. Selecting Small reduces height and scales icons accordingly.
No restart is usually required. The change applies instantly and is especially useful on laptops, tablets, or smaller displays.
Current limitations of the native feature (as of mid-2026 previews):
- Auto-hide and touch-optimized Taskbar may not work fully in non-bottom positions.
- Some flyouts (calendar, notifications) or features (Search box, Copilot, certain gestures) can still have incomplete positioning in early builds.
- Dragging the Taskbar to reposition it is not supportedโyou must use Settings.
- Clock may show abbreviated year on vertical layouts; seconds display can be limited.
- Microsoft continues polishing these behaviors ahead of broader 26H2 release.
Method 2: ExplorerPatcher (Best Free Workaround for Stable Windows 11)
ExplorerPatcher is a free, open-source tool that restores a more classic (Windows 10-style) Taskbar with full position control. It works reliably on Windows 11 versions including 23H2, 24H2, and 25H2 (and continues to be updated into 2026).
Pros: Full top/left/right/bottom support, many extra classic options, reversible.
Cons: Replaces the modern Taskbar with a Windows 10-style one (you can still keep Windows 11 Start menu).

Installation and Setup
- Visit the official GitHub releases page: github.com/valinet/ExplorerPatcher/releases/latest.
- Download ep_setup.exe.
- Run the installer and accept the UAC prompt. The screen may briefly flash or Explorer may appear frozen for 10โ20 secondsโthis is normal while it injects the new Taskbar.
- Once finished, the Taskbar switches to the classic style.
Move the Taskbar
- Right-click an empty area on the Taskbar and select Properties.
- In the left pane, ensure Taskbar is selected.
- Under Primary Taskbar Location on screen, choose Top, Bottom, Left, or Right.
- (Optional) Set Secondary Taskbar Location on screen for multi-monitor setups.
- Click Restart File Explorer at the bottom of the window.
You can also adjust Taskbar style, combine buttons, show labels, and more in the same Properties window. To uninstall, run the setup again or use the uninstall optionโit restores the original Windows 11 Taskbar.
Method 3: Windhawk Mods (Lightweight Alternative)

Windhawk is a free, open-source modding platform that lets you apply targeted changes without fully replacing the shell. Two popular mods are relevant:
- Taskbar on top for Windows 11 โ Moves the bar to the top.
- Vertical Taskbar for Windows 11 โ Moves it to the left or right with customizable width.
Install Windhawk
- Open Command Prompt or Terminal as administrator.
- Run:
winget install --id RamenSoftware.Windhawk

- Once installation is finished, launch Windhawk from the Start menu.
Install and Enable the Mod
- In Windhawk, click Explore (top right).
- Search for โTaskbar on top for Windows 11โ or โVertical Taskbar for Windows 11โ.
- Click Details> Install> Accept Risk and Install.
- The change applies automatically (or enable it in the mod settings). You can adjust options such as width for vertical placement.
Notes: Start menu and some flyouts may still animate from the bottom in early implementations. Disable or uninstall the mod anytime to revert. Windhawk also has other useful Taskbar mods (height/icon size, labels, etc.).
Further Windows 11 Taskbar Customizations Available in Settings
Regardless of method, explore these under Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors:
- Combine taskbar buttons and hide labels: Always / When full / Never (especially useful on vertical bars for labeled individual windows).
- Automatically hide the taskbar (when supported).
- Taskbar alignment (left/center or top/center depending on position).
- Show or hide system tray icons, widgets, Task View, etc.
- Multi-monitor Taskbar options (show on all displays, etc.).
You can also use PowerToys (free from Microsoft) for extra utilities, like Command Palette, that complement Taskbar customization.
Multi-Monitor Tips
Native and ExplorerPatcher both support independent or consistent positioning across displays. Test secondary Taskbar location settings carefully. Vertical Taskbars can free horizontal space on ultrawide setups.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
- Option missing in Settings: Confirm you are on a supported Insider build and that feature flags are enabled. Restart Explorer via Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc > find Windows Explorer > Restart).
- Glitches after moving: Restart Explorer or sign out/in. For third-party tools, disable the mod or uninstall temporarily.
- Start menu or flyouts misbehaving: This is a known early limitation of both native previews and some mods; Microsoft is actively fixing it.
- Want to revert: Change position back to Bottom, or uninstall ExplorerPatcher/Windhawk mod.
- Performance impact: Native has none. ExplorerPatcher and Windhawk are generally lightweight but test on your system.
- Unsupported hardware or older builds: Stick with ExplorerPatcher or Windhawk.
Some Tips and What To Expect
The native movable and smaller Taskbar is one of the most welcome quality-of-life improvements in Windows 11โs history. Once 26H2 fully rolls out, most users will no longer need third-party tools for basic positioning and sizing. In the meantime, ExplorerPatcher remains the most complete free solution for stable releases, while Windhawk offers lighter, more modular options.
Always back up important data before joining Insider channels or installing system-modifying tools. Check Microsoftโs Windows Insider Blog for the latest build notes, as the feature continues to receive polish.
With these steps you can finally place the Taskbar exactly where you want it and reclaim valuable screen real estate. Enjoy your more personalized Windows 11 desktop!
