Ralf Groene, Microsoft’s former head of Windows and devices design, has taken a new position at Amazon. As reported by The Verge, this move reunites him with Panos Panay, creating a powerhouse team that could reshape Amazon’s device strategy.
Former Microsoft Surface design chief Ralf Groene

Groene, who departed Microsoft in April 2024, played a pivotal role in shaping the Surface product line from its inception. His contributions to Microsoft were substantial, with the initial Surface tablet concept originating from his sketches, including the innovative kickstand designs that would become a signature feature of the product line. These early concepts, which began as 3D-printed prototypes held together by string, eventually evolved into the Surface RT and Pro devices that have significantly influenced the hybrid laptop market over the past decade.
The timing of Groene’s move to Amazon is particularly noteworthy, as it follows shortly after Panay’s own transition to the company. Together, they bring decades of experience in hardware development and design innovation to Amazon’s devices and services division. This reunion of two key figures from Microsoft’s Surface team suggests Amazon may be planning major innovations in its device lineup.
Amazon’s recent recruitment efforts extend beyond Groene and Panay. The company has also brought on board Xbox co-founder J Allard, who joins Panay’s devices and services team to explore “new ideas.” Allard, who left Microsoft in 2010 after working on the unrealized Courier tablet project, brings additional creative expertise to the team.
Further strengthening their team, Amazon has also welcomed former Windows Cloud executive Aidan Marcuss, who will lead teams focused on Fire TV, advertising, and the App Store. These strategic hires suggest Amazon is making a concentrated effort to enhance its device and services offerings through experienced leadership from the tech industry.
