Microsoft has announced a series of improvements in Windows 11 24H2, aimed at enhancing the update process. As noted in this blog post, Microsoft focuses on reducing installation and restart times, as well as decreasing CPU usage during updates for Windows 11 24H2. These enhancements promise to streamline the update experience for users, making it more efficient and less disruptive.
Windows 11 24H2 update improvements
Windows 11 24H2 introduces several key improvements to the monthly update process:
- Parallel processing of component manifests: This new approach complements the existing parallel hydration of components, first introduced in Windows 11 22H2. It allows for faster processing by handling multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Optimized reading and parsing: By caching the results of reading and parsing component manifests, Windows can reuse these results across multiple packages, enhancing efficiency.
- Scalable RAM usage: The system now dynamically adjusts RAM usage based on availability to store manifest caches, optimizing performance.
Performance testing results
Microsoft conducted two tests to evaluate the performance improvements in Windows 11, version 24H2:
- Test on well-maintained devices:
Installation time: Reduced by 45.6%
Restart time: Reduced by 39.7%
CPU Usage: Decreased by 15.3% - Test on outdated devices (18 months behind):
Installation time: Reduced by 43.6%
Restart time: Reduced by 33.5%
CPU usage: Decreased by 25%
These tests were conducted using Azure virtual machines with specific configurations, demonstrating significant improvements in update efficiency.
Feature update improvements
Windows 11 24H2 also introduces advancements in feature updates:
- Smaller download sizes: Feature update downloads are now approximately 200 MB smaller due to the redesign of Microsoft-developed apps and conditional downloads.
- Conditional downloads: The system compares app versions during updates and only downloads necessary updates, saving time and bandwidth.
These feature update improvements extend to include Microsoft Edge, further reducing download sizes for many endpoints.
Windows 11 24H2 marks a significant step forward in improving update fundamentals. With faster installation and restart times and reduced CPU usage, users can expect a more seamless update experience. Additionally, smaller feature update downloads contribute to a more efficient use of resources.
