XBOX Will Officially Publish Hideo Kojima’s PHYSINT, Expanding This Awesome Partnership Beyond OD

XBOX is expanding its partnership with Hideo Kojima and KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS, confirming it will publish PHYSINT, the creator’s upcoming action-espionage game. The agreement also broadens the companies’ relationship beyond games, with future collaboration planned across film and television.

In a late night XBOX Wire blog post, XBOX said it is honored that Kojima chose the company to work with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on PHYSINT. XBOX CEO Asha Sharma framed the deal as a commitment to ambitious creators and the kind of convention-challenging projects XBOX wants to support.

“Creators have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life,” Sharma said. “We’re honored that Kojima-san has chosen XBOX to work with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on PHYSINT. His ambition to challenge conventions reflects the kind of creativity we want to support at XBOX.”

The move is significant because it gives XBOX a second major Kojima Productions project alongside OD, the cloud-powered horror game originally revealed at The Game Awards in 2023. XBOX has already described OD as a project that aims to explore what games can be, and PHYSINT appears set to bring Kojima back to the action-espionage genre he helped define through Metal Gear. Kojima Says PHYSINT Development Will Continue

Hideo Kojima addressed the announcement in posts on X, explaining that PlayStation Studios informed KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS in mid-June that it would cancel the PHYSINT project. Kojima said the studio spent the following three months looking for a new partner to keep the game alive before reaching an agreement with XBOX.

“PHYSINT is an important project both to me personally and to KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS,” Kojima wrote. “Determined to keep the project alive, we have spent the last three months searching tirelessly for a new partner.”

Kojima said that, after consulting and negotiating with people across several fields, the studio found in XBOX “a partner with whom we share a common vision for the future.” He added that PHYSINT remains in development and will continue moving forward as KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS works to redefine the action-espionage genre.

XBOX publicly welcomed Kojima’s statement, replying on X: “It’s an honor to build the future together.”

XBOX And Kojima Productions Go Beyond Games

XBOX Will Publish Hideo Kojima’s PHYSINT, Expanding Partnership Beyond OD

XBOX Wire confirmed that the partnership will extend beyond OD and PHYSINT. Microsoft and KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS plan to collaborate on film and television projects designed to bring new stories to broader audiences.

That is an especially notable detail for Kojima Productions, which has increasingly positioned itself as a cross-media entertainment studio. Kojima has long explored cinematic storytelling in games, while the studio has also moved toward film production in recent years. XBOX’s involvement could give the partnership a much wider reach than a standard publishing agreement.

For XBOX, the expanded deal is another indication that it wants to secure distinctive, high-profile creative projects as it grows its gaming ecosystem across console, PC, cloud gaming, and connected entertainment. The company has also recently continued rolling out changes to its platform and cloud strategy, including new XBOX features and updates for console players and subscribers.

What We Still Don’t Know

There are still many unanswered questions about PHYSINT:

  • XBOX and KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS have not announced a release date.
  • No platforms have been confirmed for PHYSINT under its XBOX publishing agreement.
  • The companies have not revealed gameplay, a trailer, or technical details.
  • It is not yet clear whether the game will launch as an XBOX console exclusive, release on PC, arrive through Game Pass, or eventually reach other platforms.
  • No specific film or television projects have been announced.

PlayStation publicly described its decision as a difficult choice to “step away” from collaborating with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on PHYSINT, while stressing that it still admires Hideo Kojima’s vision and expects its long-running relationship with him to continue. It did not give a specific reason for ending the project.

For now, the clearest takeaway is that PHYSINT is still alive, and XBOX has secured an expanded role in the future of Kojima Productions. With OD and PHYSINT now both tied to XBOX, Microsoft has established one of the more unusual and potentially important creative partnerships in modern gaming.
