The April Xbox update is all about putting control and customization directly in players’ hands across console, PC, mobile, and even handhelds like the ROG Xbox Ally X. From a more flexible Xbox Home screen to manual library management on PC and smarter wishlist alerts on mobile, this is one of the most user-focused updates Xbox has shipped in a while.

In a new Xbox Wire post, Microsoft details a long list of quality-of-life upgrades rolling out today, including more Home screen groups, custom console colors, per-game Quick Resume controls, and a revamped Play History on console. PC players get powerful new features in the Xbox app, like manually adding any installed game or app to their library and pinning favorites to the Jump back in section, while ROG Xbox Ally owners can start testing Auto Super Resolution (Auto SR) through the Xbox Insider Program.
Console gets deeper customization with more Groups on Home screen

On Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, players can now pin up to ten Groups on the Home screen, up from just two previously, making it far easier to organize games by genre, backlog, multiplayer, and more. Group management is also more consistent, matching the familiar move-and-reorder behavior used for individual game tiles and making it clearer which Groups are already pinned in My games & apps.

The update also introduces a custom color option for the dashboard and Guide, letting you fine-tune a unique accent color via sliders instead of picking only from preset themes. Subtle highlights show your chosen color throughout the UI, and you can disable the Guide accent anytime under Settings > General > Personalization > Customize the guide, with the system remembering your last custom color for easy switching.
Smarter Quick Resume and Play History

Quick Resume remains a fan-favorite feature, but some games—especially those with heavy online connections—benefit from a fresh boot. With this update, you can now disable Quick Resume on a per-game basis, either from the Quick Resume group via Manage Quick Resume or from any game tile under Manage game and add-ons > Quick Resume settings.

A revamped Play History experience adds a dedicated tab in My games & apps, so you no longer need to return to Home just to find recent titles. The new horizontal layout groups games by recency, making it faster to scan what you played last and jump back in across devices.
Better streaming control and visibility

For cloud and remote play, Xbox is adding User Selected Resolution (USR) and a Network Quality Indicator (NQI) to give players more insight into their streaming sessions. You can now choose your preferred streaming resolution in Console Settings > Cloud Settings before you start, balancing clarity and performance for your connection.
Once a stream is active, the lightweight NQI overlay surfaces real-time information about your network health, helping you quickly understand if lag or artifacting is tied to bandwidth or stability issues. These tools are designed to give players clearer information so they can troubleshoot and tweak settings more confidently.
PC app: manual library control and gamepad cursor

On Windows PCs and handhelds, the Xbox app now lets you manually add any installed game or app into your Xbox library, regardless of storefront. That means Steam, Epic, GOG, or other launchers can all funnel into a single unified library, complete with custom names, icons, launch options, and even advanced parameters like mod flags or special commands.

You can also pin up to three favorite titles in the Jump back in or Most Recent lists, keeping your go-to games right at the front on Windows 11 PCs and supported handhelds. Pinning is as simple as right-clicking a game and selecting “Pin to this list,” and it stays there until you unpin it, covering locally installed, cloud, and other supported titles.

A new Gamepad cursor feature turns any connected controller into a mouse-style pointer for apps that don’t support gamepad navigation natively. Using the left stick to move a cursor, players can control apps like Spotify or Discord without needing a mouse or touch input, which is especially handy on handhelds or couch setups.
Cleaner notifications on PC and mobile

On PC, players can now choose where Xbox notifications appear on screen via the Game Bar’s Settings widget, helping keep alerts visible but out of the way of HUD elements or UI you care about. This small tweak is aimed at streamers and PC players with complex setups who want more control over how overlays behave.

The Xbox mobile app is also getting wishlist alerts that notify you when a tracked game goes on sale, joins Game Pass, or becomes available for preorder. Each alert links directly to the product page so you can buy, install, or remotely start a download with a single tap, making it easier to act quickly on deals and new releases.
ROG Xbox Ally and Auto SR preview

For handheld fans, the update includes improvements for ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X when docked to external displays, including better docking behavior, support for LE Audio super wideband stereo voice on compatible headsets, and enhanced vibration. These devices also now support the same “manually add a game or app to Xbox library” and Gamepad cursor features from the Xbox PC app, giving handheld owners the same flexible library control.
Xbox Insiders on the ROG Xbox Ally X can preview Auto Super Resolution (Auto SR) for docked play, which aims to sharpen visuals and smooth gameplay on external monitors and TVs without sacrificing performance. Players can learn more about the handheld-focused changes in a dedicated Xbox Wire post that dives deeper into Auto SR, docking, and vibration tweaks.
Rewards, dynamic backgrounds, and game additions

Beyond system features, Microsoft is running a Microsoft Rewards Total Prize Drop promotion through May 21, giving eligible players a chance at cash, a Mercedes-Benz, Xbox Gift Cards, and thousands of instant prizes, with at least one free entry available. Terms vary by region, and full rules are available via official Microsoft Rewards links.

For visual flair, new dynamic backgrounds themed around Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred, Invincible VS, Kiln, and Overwatch are now available on Xbox Series X|S consoles, letting players theme their dashboard after some of the biggest recent releases.

On the game side, the Handheld Compatibility Program and Xbox Play Anywhere lineup continue to grow, with new titles like Hades II, Mouse: P.I. For Hire, Super Meat Boy 3D, and many others gaining handheld optimization, cross-device ownership, or new streaming options.

Help shape the future past the April Xbox update
Xbox is encouraging players who want early access to features like these to join the Xbox Insider Program, available via the Xbox Insider Hub app on console and PC. Feedback from Insiders directly shapes future dashboard, app, and cloud features, and today’s April update is a clear example of that iterative approach.
