XBOX is testing a new disc-to-digital feature that lets players claim a digital entitlement for eligible physical game discs. Starting August 31, XBOX Insiders will be able to insert supported XBOX One and XBOX Series X discs, launch the game, and add a digital entitlement to their account.
The initiative is focused on game preservation and library flexibility. Once a supported game has been claimed, players can access digital benefits such as XBOX Play Anywhere and XBOX Cloud Gaming where supported, while the original physical disc continues to work normally.
How XBOX Disc-to-Digital Works

The basic process is straightforward, although it is limited to supported titles and currently begins with XBOX Insider testing.
- Insert an eligible physical XBOX game disc into an XBOX One or XBOX Series X console.
- Launch the game from the disc.
- Claim the digital entitlement when the option is available.
- Keep using the original disc normally, or access the game’s available digital benefits through your XBOX account.
XBOX says most disc-based XBOX One and XBOX Series X games support the feature. The rollout will begin with thousands of titles, though Microsoft cautions that not every game will be eligible at launch.
What You Get With a Digital Entitlement
A claimed entitlement gives supported physical games the flexibility normally associated with digital purchases. Depending on the title and platform support, this includes XBOX Play Anywhere and XBOX Cloud Gaming.
| Benefit | What it means |
|---|---|
| Digital entitlement | The supported game is associated with your XBOX account |
| XBOX Play Anywhere | Play supported titles on XBOX consoles and Windows PCs |
| XBOX Cloud Gaming | Stream supported games through XBOX Cloud Gaming |
| Physical disc support | Your original disc continues to work as it did before |
| Game preservation | Easier long-term access as XBOX hardware and services evolve |
The feature does not mean every old game disc instantly becomes a digital game. Support is game-specific, and Microsoft will continue expanding the catalog over time.
Why the New Feature Matters
Many XBOX players have game libraries split between physical discs and digital purchases. That can become more complicated when moving between console generations, playing on PC, or using cloud gaming services.
Microsoft says the new system is part of its broader commitment to game preservation. The company wants physical game buyers to have more confidence that the games they purchased will remain accessible as technology, distribution, and devices change.
For players with sizable XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc collections, the feature could reduce some of the friction between owning a game physically and using the broader XBOX ecosystem.
When Does XBOX Disc to Digital Launch?
The first test begins for XBOX Insiders on August 31, 2026. Microsoft has not announced a date for a full public rollout, and it has not yet published a complete list of compatible games.
That means players should treat the first phase as a limited preview. If you are already part of the XBOX Insider Program, you may be able to test the feature and send feedback directly to Microsoft. New testers can join by downloading the XBOX Insider Hub on XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, or Windows PC.
Not Every XBOX Disc Will Qualify
There are several important limitations to keep in mind:
- The feature starts with most XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc-based games, not every title.
- XBOX has confirmed that thousands of games will be supported initially, but has not released a complete title list.
- Players must use an XBOX One or XBOX Series X console to insert and launch an eligible disc.
- Benefits such as Play Anywhere and Cloud Gaming depend on support for the specific game.
- More titles are expected to be added after the initial launch.
This makes the feature promising, but it is best to wait for Microsoft’s compatibility information before assuming a specific physical game will qualify.
A Big Step for Physical XBOX Games
The new entitlement system could become one of XBOX’s most meaningful game-preservation updates in years. It does not replace physical media, and players can continue using their discs as they always have. Instead, it gives eligible disc owners a path to access more of the digital ecosystem around games they already own.
Microsoft announced the new feature alongside the XBOX 25th Anniversary Collection and XBOX Series X25 Limited Edition console. While the anniversary hardware celebrates where XBOX began, the disc-to-digital initiative is a practical signal of how Microsoft wants players’ libraries to move forward.
