Microsoft’s popular email and productivity service, Outlook, is currently experiencing a significant worldwide outage, causing widespread disruption for users across the globe. The issues, which began early on October 10, 2024, are affecting both the desktop application and web-based versions of Outlook, leaving many unable to access their emails or use essential features.
Widespread Microsoft Outlook outage

Initially reported as affecting only European users, the outage has since been confirmed to be impacting customers worldwide. Users are experiencing a range of problems, including:
- Application crashes
- Inability to log in to accounts
- High system resource usage
- Emails not being received
- Freezing and unresponsiveness in the web version (OWA)
The issues are not limited to Outlook alone, as Microsoft has indicated that other Microsoft 365 services may also be affected.
Microsoft’s response
Microsoft’s support team is actively investigating the problem. In a statement, the company acknowledged:
“We’re investigating an issue in which users may be experiencing crashing, not receiving emails or observing high memory usage when using the Outlook client.”
The tech giant is currently analyzing telemetry data from affected customers and attempting to reproduce the issue internally to develop a mitigation plan. Microsoft has identified a potential memory management issue that may be at the root of the problem.
User reports and workarounds
Thousands of users have taken to social media and outage tracking services like DownDetector to report their experiences. The volume of user reports surged around 7:57 AM Eastern Time on October 10, indicating the widespread nature of the outage.
Some users have reported success with temporary workarounds:
- For Outlook on the web (OWA), clearing the browser’s cache and cookies from the last 24 hours has helped some users regain access.
- Others have resorted to using alternative email clients or web-based email services as a temporary solution.
Ongoing Investigation
Microsoft’s support team is working diligently to resolve the issue. They are currently:
- Analyzing networking data and authentication processes, with a focus on the Netherlands region
- Investigating potential impacts on other Microsoft 365 services
- Obtaining memory dumps and logs from Outlook client telemetry data for further analysis
Context
This is not the first time Microsoft has faced challenges with its services. In August, the company mitigated an Azure outage that affected multiple services for customers across North and Latin America for more than two hours. However, the current Outlook outage appears to be more widespread and longer-lasting.
Looking forward
As Microsoft continues to investigate and work on a resolution, users are advised to stay updated through official Microsoft channels and the Microsoft 365 Status Twitter account. The company has promised to provide regular updates as more information becomes available.
In the meantime, affected users are encouraged to explore alternative communication methods and to be patient as Microsoft works to restore full functionality to the Outlook service.
This ongoing situation serves as a reminder of the critical role email services play in our daily lives and the potential impact of such outages on global productivity. It also highlights the importance of having backup communication plans in place for businesses that heavily rely on cloud-based services.
