Microsoft has announced plans to enable direct game purchases through its Xbox app on Android devices. This development, set to roll out in November, comes on the heels of a landmark US court ruling that mandates Google to open up its Play Store to third-party competition.

Xbox president Sarah Bond shared the news on social media, stating, “The court’s ruling to open up Google’s mobile store in the US will allow more choice and flexibility. Our mission is to allow more players to play on more devices so we are thrilled to share that starting in November, players will be able to play and purchase Xbox games directly from the Xbox App on Android.”

This move by Microsoft capitalizes on the recent court decision that deemed Google’s Android app store an illegal monopoly. The ruling requires Google to cease forcing developers to use its Google Play Billing system and to allow the distribution of rival third-party app stores within the Play Store itself.

For Xbox users, this means a more streamlined experience when it comes to purchasing and playing games on Android devices. The integration of Xbox Cloud Gaming features will allow users to immediately stream games to their mobile devices after purchase. This seamless process could potentially boost game sales and increase engagement with Xbox’s mobile offerings.

The timing of this announcement is particularly noteworthy, as it comes shortly after Microsoft merged its Xbox app with the Xbox Game Pass app, consolidating features and simplifying the user experience. With the addition of direct purchase capabilities, the Xbox App on Android is poised to become a more comprehensive gaming platform.

This development is part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to expand its presence in the mobile gaming market. Following its acquisition of Activision-Blizzard-King in 2023, Microsoft has been vocal about its plans to create an Xbox Mobile Store. While the launch of this store has been delayed, the ability to purchase games directly through the Xbox App could be seen as a step towards this larger goal.

The implications of this change extend beyond just Xbox and Microsoft. It represents a shift in the mobile app landscape, potentially opening doors for other companies to offer similar direct purchase options within their Android apps. This could lead to increased competition and more choices for consumers in the mobile gaming market.

However, it’s worth noting that Google has announced its intention to appeal the court ruling. The tech giant argues that the mandated changes could lead to unintended consequences that might harm consumers, developers, and device manufacturers.
