UK Antitrust regulator CMA scrutinize partnership between Microsoft and OpenAI

In a report by TechRepublic, Microsoft is drawing the attention of the UK Antitrust regulator Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), which has turned its gaze towards the intricate ties binding Microsoft and OpenAI, contemplating the prospect of a merger and its potential repercussions on the competitive landscape.

On December 8, the CMA made a significant move, soliciting input from Microsoft, OpenAI, and interested third parties. It’s essential to note that this isn’t a full-blown investigation but a customary preliminary information-gathering step, a prelude to a more in-depth analysis.

Microsoft’s President and Vice Chair, Brad Smith, emphasized the collaborative innovation and competition fostered since the partnership’s inception in 2019 on X (formerly known as Twitter). He clarified that the only change is Microsoft’s appointment of a non-voting observer on OpenAI’s board, distinct from an outright acquisition.
