Windows 11 2026 Update is now available: Here’s how to get version 26H2

Microsoft has officially started rolling out the Windows 11 2026 Update, also known as Windows 11 version 26H2, for eligible PCs.

The big news here is that this should be one of the easiest Windows 11 feature updates Microsoft has released in a while. If your computer is already running Windows 11 version 24H2 or 25H2, the move to 26H2 is designed to work like a regular monthly update instead of a massive full operating system upgrade.

For many users, that means a small download, a quick installation, and one restart.

Microsoft had previously made Windows 11 26H2 available to Release Preview Insiders, and we covered how to install Windows 11 26H2 through the Release Preview Channel earlier this month. Now, the company is beginning the broader public rollout for supported PCs.

Windows 11 26H2 arrives as an enablement package

Windows 11 version 26H2 is not being delivered like a traditional major Windows release. Instead, Microsoft is using an enablement package for eligible PCs on Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2.

An enablement package is a small update that turns on features and components that are already part of Windows. Since Windows 11 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 share the same underlying servicing branch and much of the same codebase, your PC may already have many of the required files installed through previous monthly updates.

That is why the 26H2 upgrade should be much faster than older Windows feature updates. You are not downloading a completely new version of Windows from scratch. Microsoft is essentially activating the newest annual release on top of the Windows foundation already installed on your PC.

This is also why many of the changes tied to Windows 11 26H2 may feel familiar. Microsoft has been bringing new features to Windows 11 gradually through its continuous innovation model, rather than holding everything back for one major yearly release.

We saw that approach with Windows 11 version 25H2, which brought AI actions in File Explorer, Widget improvements, Gaming Copilot additions, Windows Hello changes, Copilot+ PC features, and more while sharing many improvements with version 24H2.

How to get the Windows 11 2026 Update

Windows 11 version 26H2 is available now for eligible devices running Windows 11 version 24H2 or Windows 11 version 25H2.

To look for the update:

1. Open Settings on your Windows 11 PC.
2. Select Windows Update.
3. Turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available.
4. Click Check for updates.
5. Look for the Windows 11, version 26H2 update.
6. Click Download and install if it appears.

Microsoft is using a controlled rollout, so the update may not show up for every compatible PC immediately. That is normal. The company will gradually offer Windows 11 26H2 to more devices as it gathers data from the initial rollout.

Microsoft can also apply a safeguard hold if it finds a known issue involving a specific driver, app, accessory, or hardware configuration. If that happens, your PC may not see the update until the compatibility problem is resolved.

Why you may want to update

The Windows 11 2026 Update brings the newest Windows security, reliability, and quality improvements. It also starts a fresh support lifecycle for supported Windows 11 editions.

For Windows 11 24H2 users, especially those on Home or Pro, that new support lifecycle matters. Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro editions are scheduled to reach end of servicing on October 13, 2026, so upgrading to 26H2 is the sensible path for users who want to continue receiving regular security and quality updates.

Microsoft also says that select features that first appeared in Windows 11 25H2 but were disabled by default will be enabled by default in Windows 11 26H2.

Keep your PC updated first

Before looking for Windows 11 26H2, it is worth installing any available monthly Windows updates for your current version. Microsoft has been steadily improving Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 with new features, fixes, and under-the-hood changes.

For example, the optional Windows 11 KB5077241 update added a built-in internet speed-test shortcut from the taskbar, native Sysmon support, wake-from-sleep improvements, and other reliability fixes for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2.

Keeping Windows Update current should also improve your chances of receiving the 26H2 offer when Microsoft makes it available for your device.

Windows 11 26H2 looks like a low-risk upgrade

Windows 11 version 26H2 is not shaping up to be a dramatic “new Windows” moment with a huge redesign or an entirely separate platform. Instead, it is a yearly servicing update built around Microsoft’s newer, lower-disruption update model.

That is good news for most people. If you are already on Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2, upgrading to 26H2 should feel closer to installing a normal cumulative update than completing a major in-place upgrade.

Still, if you rely on your PC for work, run specialized apps, use older hardware, or have a complicated gaming or peripheral setup, there is no harm in waiting a few weeks for Microsoft to expand the rollout and identify any early compatibility issues.

For everyone else, head to Settings > Windows Update, turn on the latest-updates toggle, and see whether the Windows 11 2026 Update is ready for your PC.
