Microsoft has released Windows 11 version 26H2 to the Release Preview Channel, giving eligible Windows Insiders an early way to install the company’s 2026 annual feature update. The rollout is not yet for every Windows 11 PC, but it is available now through Windows Update for Release Preview Insiders whose devices meet Windows 11 hardware requirements.
Unlike a traditional major upgrade that replaces large parts of the operating system, Windows 11 26H2 arrives through an enablement package. That means the installation should be relatively quick for supported PCs already on the shared Windows 11 24H2/25H2 servicing branch.
Who can install Windows 11 26H2?

Windows 11 26H2 is currently available to people enrolled in the Windows Insider Program’s Release Preview Channel. Microsoft says the update is available to Release Preview Insiders on PCs that meet the standard Windows 11 system requirements.
This is not the Dev or Canary Channel. Release Preview is generally Microsoft’s last Insider testing stage before a wider public rollout, making it the better option for users who want early access without using the most experimental Windows builds.
You can install Windows 11 26H2 now if you:
- Use a Windows 11 PC that meets Microsoft’s hardware requirements.
- Are already enrolled in the Windows Insider Program.
- Have selected the Release Preview Channel.
- Are willing to install a pre-general-availability version of the annual Windows update.
Microsoft plans to make Windows 11 26H2 generally available later in 2026.
How to install Windows 11 26H2
If your PC is already enrolled in the Release Preview Channel, installing Windows 11 26H2 is straightforward.
- Open Settings on your Windows 11 PC.
- Select Windows Update from the sidebar.
- Check for updates.
- Look for the Windows 11, version 26H2 offer.
- Select Download and install.
- Let Windows download the update, then restart when prompted.
Microsoft is offering Windows 11 26H2 through the Windows Update “seeker” experience. In practical terms, that means eligible Insiders must manually look for it and choose to install it rather than having the update forced onto their PC immediately.
After upgrading, your PC will continue receiving normal monthly servicing updates through Windows Update.
Not in Release Preview yet?
You first need to enroll your device in the Windows Insider Program and select the Release Preview Channel:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Windows Update.
- Select Windows Insider Program.
- Sign in with your Microsoft account if asked.
- Choose Release Preview Channel.
- Restart your PC if Windows requests it.
- Return to Settings > Windows Update and check for updates.

Before enrolling, back up any important files. Release Preview builds are typically more stable than Dev or Canary builds, but they are still preview software and can contain unresolved issues.
Why the 26H2 update installs quickly
Windows 11 26H2 is an enablement package, sometimes abbreviated as eKB. Rather than being a complete operating-system replacement, it activates code and features that are already part of the shared Windows servicing branch.
Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 use that same servicing branch. They also receive many of the same features and improvements through Microsoft’s ongoing monthly-update model.
That has two important implications:
- The update should be smaller and faster to install than a conventional full-version upgrade.
- Some features associated with Windows 11 26H2 may already be present on updated 24H2 and 25H2 PCs because Microsoft has been introducing them gradually through monthly updates.
In other words, upgrading to 26H2 does not necessarily mean your PC will suddenly look completely different. It primarily moves your device onto the newest annual Windows 11 release and its corresponding support lifecycle.
What Windows 11 26H2 means for 24H2 and 25H2
For most home users, the biggest takeaway is that Windows 11 26H2 continues Microsoft’s approach of delivering new capabilities gradually instead of saving every visible change for a single annual release.
Microsoft says Windows 11 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 share feature and enhancement delivery through its continuous innovation efforts. That means many 26H2 additions may already feel familiar if you have kept Windows Update current.
Commercial customers will see several previously introduced experiences enabled by default in 26H2, including:
- Windows settings backup.
- App-specific actions from the taskbar.
- Certain File Explorer improvements.
For everyday consumers, the most meaningful reason to move to 26H2 will be keeping Windows current and supported—not necessarily accessing a massive list of exclusive launch-day features.

Should you upgrade from Windows 11 24H2?
If you are comfortable using the Release Preview Channel, Windows 11 26H2 is worth considering—especially if your PC is currently on Windows 11 24H2 Home or Pro.
Microsoft says Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro editions will reach end of updates on October 13, 2026. After that date, those editions will no longer receive regular security and quality updates. Windows 11 24H2 Enterprise and Education editions have a longer support period and remain supported until October 12, 2027.
That does not mean every 24H2 home PC needs to install an Insider build immediately. General availability for Windows 11 26H2 is still planned for later this calendar year. But it does make 26H2 an update worth watching as the October support deadline approaches.
Upgrade now if
- You already use the Release Preview Channel.
- You want to test the upcoming annual Windows 11 update early.
- You maintain backups and are comfortable troubleshooting occasional preview-build issues.
- You want to validate Windows 11 26H2 on a secondary PC before deploying it elsewhere.
Wait for general availability if
- This is your only work, school, or mission-critical PC.
- You prefer Windows updates that have completed Insider testing.
- You do not want to join the Windows Insider Program.
- You would rather wait for Microsoft to offer 26H2 normally through Windows Update.
Known issue to keep in mind
Microsoft’s current Windows 11 release-health documentation notes a recently resolved issue affecting some games on Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 systems. Reports involved games becoming unresponsive, closing unexpectedly, displaying an EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION error, or restarting the PC.
Microsoft says the issue was associated with certain RGB-related peripheral or internal-component drivers—often components with names similar to inpoutx64—rather than Windows updates themselves. The company has begun automatically deploying a block that prevents the affected driver from loading in applicable cases, though a restart may be required for the resolution to take effect.
If you rely on your PC for gaming, it is sensible to check your RGB software and peripheral-driver updates before installing preview builds.
Windows 11 26H2 FAQ
Is Windows 11 26H2 available to everyone?
No. As of August 28, 2026, Windows 11 26H2 is available to eligible Windows Insiders in the Release Preview Channel. Microsoft expects broader availability later in 2026.
Is Windows 11 26H2 a full reinstall?
No. Microsoft is delivering 26H2 as an enablement package. Because 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 share the same servicing branch, the update is designed to activate the new version rather than operate like a complete OS replacement.
Will Windows 11 26H2 have new features?
Yes, but many of its features and enhancements may already be available on fully updated Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 PCs. Microsoft has introduced improvements through monthly servicing updates under its continuous-innovation model.
Should Windows 11 24H2 users upgrade?
Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro users should plan their upgrade path before support ends on October 13, 2026. If you do not want preview software, waiting for Microsoft’s broader 26H2 rollout later this year is the lower-risk option.
Can I get a Windows 11 26H2 ISO?
Microsoft says Windows 11 26H2 ISO files will be made available through the Windows Insider ISO download page in the near term.
Microsoft has positioned Windows 11 26H2 as a smaller, enablement-based annual update rather than a dramatic clean-break release. For most users, the best move is to monitor the rollout, keep Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2 updated in the meantime, and plan to move to 26H2 before the 24H2 Home and Pro support deadline arrives in October.
