Windows 11 2025 Update: A New Era Begins

Windows 11 2025 Update (25H2): How to Get the Latest Features and Enhanced Security Right Now

Microsoft unveiled the latest annual feature update for Windows 11, known as version 25H2 (the 2025 Update). Building on the momentum of continual innovation and security improvements, this update is aimed at streamlining deployment and boosting user protection. More than a billion people rely on Windows to connect, work, and play, making every major update an event with worldwide impact.

The Windows 11 2025 Update (25H2) is delivered as an enablement package (eKB), similar to the approach for previous recent releases. This means devices already running Windows 11, version 24H2, can receive the new update quickly and efficiently using existing Windows servicing technology. Both 24H2 and 25H2 share a common code base and servicing branch, which simplifies update management for IT admins and end users alike. Monthly updates will continue to add improvements as part of Microsoft’s continuous innovation model.

Leaner OS and Security-First Design

The update removes several legacy features, such as PowerShell 2.0 and Windows Management Instrumentation command-line (WMIC), helping make Windows leaner and less prone to vulnerabilities.

As part of the Secure Future Initiative, significant advancements have been rolled in for build and runtime vulnerability detection. AI-assisted secure coding helps reduce risks, and the entire lifecycle of software development follows Microsoft’s robust Security Development Lifecycle (SDL) policy, aiming to proactively address threats like ransomware and phishing.

What’s New in Features and Experience

While 25H2 primarily focuses on security and under-the-hood improvements, users also get access to all recently announced features from 24H2, plus new enhancements rolling out as part of continuous monthly updates.

Highlights from recent updates:

  • AI Actions in File Explorer: Edit images, summarize documents, and access advanced content management powered by Copilot+.

  • Hardware Indicator Customization: Move volume, brightness, and connectivity indicators anywhere on the display.

  • Settings App Upgrades: Advanced Settings page for easier configuration and new controls over developer and system features.

  • Task Manager Improvements: See processor usage with new, industry-standard metrics and refined details for performance.

  • Faster File Explorer: Context menus and large folders load more quickly, ideal for power users managing big libraries.

  • Narrator and Accessibility: Improved support for Braille Viewer and easier navigation for users with special needs.

  • Enterprise Functionality: IT admins can now remove specific pre-installed apps via Intune or Group Policy on managed devices.

  • Wi-Fi 7 Support: Enhanced enterprise connectivity capabilities for modern networking.

  • Windows Backup for Organizations: Seamless device migration and restore for enterprise and education deployments.
